Yes. It's called exploitation. People throughout history have used the fear factor (in this case fear of eternal damnation) to gather support for their cause.

The problem is man, most assuredly, who usually does have selfish ambition for one reason or another. The scriptures have been used to justify wicked deeds. The Inquisition comes to mind and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Christianity isn't the only religion that uses scriptures from a holy book to justify their deeds. It's seen in all religions.

You should be asking this question of people such as 'the violater' who see the world as Us vs Them, thinking all the time that they are trying to 'win' against the gays, the jews, the animists, the muslims, the buddhists, the atheists, the pagans, the seikhs, the agnostics, the hindus, the teapot worshippers, the humanists, outspoken women, evolutionists, other Christian Churches, you know, the rest of humankind...
Would such a person exhibit the same divisive, simple-minded bigotry without the bible? I dunno. Ask him....?
As he says: "The 'hate mongers' always blame god"
See right there is such a twisted propaganda.
1. I do not monger hate.
2. I do not blame God, I do not believe in him. I blame you and people like you for spreading egotistical lies, blame and division with no evidence, logic, reason or authority to do so.
3. Off to the mirror room for you, sir.

I cannot concede that the problem is not Christianity, because I have yet to meet a Christian who is not a hypocrite in his or her beliefs. I will be 40 soon, and I don't think my point of view will change from this if I reach 80. The one thing I will concede is that I am set in my thinking similarly to a Christian.

On the $$!!!
Remember, or go read;
The parable about the Wheat & the Weeds!
The time is coming, when ppl will say to Jesus
"did we not expel demons in your name"....
(and more) he tells them:
"Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness"
Humans are sinful, in nature.
Be it greed,fame,selfish ambition;
whatever it is that ur heart* is desiring.
That is what Satan will use.
We can't forget the fact that Satan does mislead the human race.
Even blinds the human mind, from 'seeing-knowing,'
the One True God.
The Holy Scriptures says he can even turn himself into an angel of light
*The Holy Scriptures say that the heart is treacherous.
Use your power of reasoning...your mind.
During WWII both sides, claimed that God was on there side.
I just watched a show nite b4 last- about WWII.
They were all wrong.

Right. People who don't believe in the Christian God don't blame the Christian God. They instead have a problem with the way humans apply a system (religion) made by and for humans. They believe scripture is written by humans. Etc., etc.

"Are you willing to concede that the problem is not God or Christianity, but instead it was a person or a group of people who are acting out on their own selfish ambition?"
How is that different from saying that the problem is Christianity?
The problem obviously isn't God, because there isn't any God. But to say that the historical evils of Christianity - say, the anti-abortion movement, or the creationist movement - are caused by groups of Christians acting on their own selfish ambition seems to me the same as saying that those evils are due to Christianity.
Would there be a such thing as Christianity if it were purged of the evil side? It's clear to me that a large part of what attracts people to Christianity is the opportunity to blame someone else for the problems of the world. If Christianity were to cleanse itself until it was pure and free from the anti-abortionist stuff, the creationists, the anti-gay, anti-Islam, anti-atheist stuff, I think it'd shrink almost to insignificance as a player in the world.

ALL the Muslims got blamed for the 9/11 Extremists
You've GOTTA accept that the WHOLE X-ian faith is similarly judged on the actions of those who claim to be Christian even if you reject their right to do so.

I would agree with you. I think these situations give people who don't believe in God a lot ammunition to further that belief. People commit horrible evils in God's name, and yet appears that God does nothing about it (at least in this life). It's that age old question: if God loves us, why does he allow evil in this world, especially the evil that is committed in God's name?

if there were no scriptures what would they twist?
translation is vague at best
if god is responsible for everything then he is
he doesnt become exempt when it is convenient for christians
and anything can be rationalized to mean anything
if god created christianity then god is responsible
maybe your conceding that man made religion which therefore would make man responsible for its interpretation

Man, by nature, is a beast of dominance and survival. Therefore due to man's supposed intelligence, we frown upon obtaining anything through unjustified violence.
As religion is used as a tool of control, it gave man a degree of justification for violence and hatred.
Pity, as religion can be a beautiful thing.
