You have chronic asthma and you smoke? I won't even go into it!
There are quiet a few things related with a throat problem such as you relate to, cancer at your age isn't one of them but, you can never rule anything out.

There is a malady that involves the throat: the brain controls the swallowing process and sometimes it can be very slight or very bad where one cannot swallow.
In effect, the food gets near a point between the bronchial and the esophagus and really doesn't know which way to go.
You can end up coughing all the time when you eat, like something in the throat other then a nervous cough or, you can actually choke on the food your eating.
Some people can end up with a feeding tube inserted due to this.

If this continues I would see a doctor and tell him my tale, you might have to have an upper barium workout to see what's going on. Good luck and, stop the ciggies in your condition.
