Matthew 27:3-5
When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." They said, "What is that to us? See to it yourself." And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself.

Acts 1:18
Now this man [Judas] bought a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

Matthew said that Judas committed suicide by hanging himself while Luke said Judas fell off a precipice. Note also that Matthew said Judas gave the money back to the chief priests while Luke said that Judas used the money to buy a plot of land.

Which is it? Did Judas throw the money down in the temple, or buy land with it?

Judas hung himself. The rope broke or something and Judas fell to a very shameful ending.

Concerning the money,
It was actually the Jewish leaders that bought the lot.
Since the money now had Jesus blood on it, they could not put it back in the treasury, so they disposed of the money by buying the lot in Judas name. They regarded the money as his, even though he gave it back.
That's their way of not having blood guilt concerning what they did to Jesus.
The way of the wicked. They of course could not murder Jesus themselves, yet felt justified to have it done.

If you read on in Matthew you'll see that it was the Jewish chief priests and elders who bought the field where Judas hanged himself, not Judas. They bought it with thirty pieces of silver that Judas had returned.

Without further clarifcation, I would take an educated guess and agree with Primoa (sometimes he's right, and others...well...not so much). The tree Judas was hanging from could have been a dead one. The branch he was hanging from could have broken and the tree could have very easily been overlooking a cliff. Judas' body could have hit the ground, feet first, and then it went over head first.

No way to know for sure. Unless someone builds a time machine that actually works (lol), then we can send a CSI crew back and record firsthand what happened exactly. lol.

Without further clarifcation, I would say both happened.

Judas was given money to betray Jesus. After he did so he returned that money to the Temple.

The people at the Temple took the returned money and bought the land to bury Judas's body.

Judas then hanged himself. After his body remained hanging from the tree for more than 2 days it was decomposing and fell apart. The body hit the ground and burst open.

Both accounts are true.

This is claimed to be a contradiction, but really is not.
Judas threw the money away, the religious leaders that hired him used it to buy land.
Judas did hang himself, but did so on a cliff's edge. Apparently something broke, rope, limb, whatever it was, and he fell hitting rocks below, bursting open. Must have been sharp rocks.
Matthew 27:7 states the leaders bought it.
Acts 1:18 a narration from Peter, credits Judas with buying the field, since he left it up to the religious leaders what to do with his money.

He hung himself... The Bible does not contradict itself! Matthew 27:5-8 says, "So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. the government priests picked up the money and pronounced, ‘that's against the regulation to place this into the treasury, in view that's blood funds.’ so as that they desperate to apply the money to purchase the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. by using fact of this it somewhat is been called the sector of Blood to at present." Acts a million:18-19 says, "With the advantages he have been given for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his physique burst open and all his intestines spilled out. everybody in Jerusalem heard approximately this, so as that they called that field of their language Akeldama, this is, field of Blood." this is genuine? Did Judas dangle himself or did he fall? Did Judas purchase the sector or did the priests purchase the sector? Judas hung himself interior the potters field (Matthew 27:5) and then after his physique decayed and bloated, of course the rope broke and he burst into products on the land of the potters field (Acts a million:18-19). This passage presumes Judas' putting, as a guy falling down in a field does not bring about his physique bursting open. in basic terms decomposition and a fall from a top would desire to reason a physique to burst open. while Judas threw the thirty products of silver down, the priests took the money and used it to purchase the potter’s field (Matthew 27:7), no longer understanding that Judas replaced into going to dangle himself there. Judas would possibly no longer have bought the sector himself, notwithstanding it replaced into the money Judas won for betraying Jesus that bought the sector.

Judas threw the money down in the temple, went out and tried to hang himself in remorse, but the rope broke when his neck broke and he fell to the ground like the Scripture said with his bowels gushing out. The PRIESTS took the money and bought the plot of land because it was blood money and wasn't deemed as being "right" to put it back in the temple treasury. The name of the field is Aceldama, which means literally "field of blood".

Welcome to the land of Apologetics. Assume the scripture is right, and come up with a story to make it all come together.

Primoa's answer was
"He hanged himself....it's pretty clear in Scripture.
He was probably hanging for quite a while before he fell & burst open.....makes sense."

Never mind that Acts never mentions Judas hanging himself. The author of Acts see him as suffering from perhaps suicide or perhaps an accident, but no rope is involved, where as Matthew's author sees him as a self-lynching.

These are clearly different stories. They are not connected other than the possibility of suicide in Acts. But the Apologists insist that they're they make sense in juxtaposition. You wouldn't trust your 9-year-old if they came up with such divergent tales, but God gets by with it.

In reality, while the stories of Jesus life and work before the crucifixion are mildly compelling as the possible work of a rebel rabbi, the stories told after the crucifixion fly apart with no two making the remotest sense or having the slightest connection with one another. They start with a reported empty tomb and end up light years apart.

Regardless of the story, it still ends the same: Judas betrays Christ as was foretold........

I think Judas still is alive and wanders the earth trying to bring about the apocalypse so he can be released from his immortality.

Silly fairy tales. You might as well be asking is it the Snow Miser that makes it so cold that it can snow, or is it the Heat Miser that takes away the heat so it can snow. Fairy tales to keep scared little children amused, in line, and obeying commands.
