Different churches have different norms.
Tithe means literally 10%. Many churches will encourage you to give that much, but very few (that I know of) will force you to. Churches usually do want you to pledge (promise) some amount, but in most mainline denominations that's up to you to decide.
Most churches I know of will have what they call "stewardship campaigns" that explain why you should tithe. Pledging helps the church figure out what programs it can run (meals for the homeless, Sunday School, youth group, plumbing repairs).
The first year I was at my church I didn't pledge, but then I saw the church doing a lot of good things and thinking carefully about how it spent money. I pledged a little, then more as I started to care about particular programs. There are other guidelines that many churches recommend, like giving the wages for your first hour of work each week or giving the cost of something you could do without (like movie and popcorn). My congregation takes into account the time people spend doing stuff like painting and raking leaves. Also, some people give to non-religious charities that do good work and count that as part of their tithing.
If you are in a church that is pressuring you to give, try attending some other services and talking to different people who are church-goers. I would not stay at a church that wouldn't let me ask questions about the budget or make up my own mind about how much to give.

I think that God or the Goddess would rather that you "tithe" by trying to live your life everyday with the intent to improve the life of others and yourself by kindness, caring, goodwill, protection of nature, etc.
If you belong to a church that would actually kick you out if don't front up with money ... then I'd run before I tithed!!!

THe Church never requires one to tithe. Tithing must come freely from the giver. So regardless of whether you give or not, your Church will always welcome you to worship with them.
The amount of tithing stated in the Bible is 10%. Read Malachi.

You can stay as long as you like....
Tithing comes from a cheerful, willing giver.....not out of force.
And the normal amount is usually 10% of the gross (before taxes)

In most churchs
As long as you want,
You will not be asked to leave,
and it is what you want to give, although the bible sugests 10% I believe.
However, not all christian churches and sub religions are the same and some require more effort than others.

It's probably like a strip club -- they can't FORCE you to leave, but you're expected to sit in the back.
At least, that's what I heard....
