I work for a small hotel and work the midnight shift.

I ALL the time see little kids running around the hotel at all hours of the night and morning.. NO parent to be seen.

Last night two, what looked like, 10 year olds were running up and down the stairs. I let it go for a moment before I ask where mom or dad was, 'There sleeping, they said we could play in the hallway." OMG!!! I very nicely said "not really honey, you guys need to go back to your room" thankfully they went. This was 11pm..

I put breakfast out at around 6am. and this morning like yesterday morning two different little kids come down for breakfast , WITH OUT A PARENT!! These kids looked all of 5 years old.

The little girl spilled cereal over herself cause the contor was to big for her to pick up. The little boy picked up every single hard boiled egg before he found the one he wanted. Mind you, I did not see this, a guest told me.

What the hell is up with people.? YOU ARE NOT AT HOME!!

We have signs all over the place saying that children need to be with a parent. Like in the pool area. NOPE. 'MOM said we could swim'. No matter the time . I have even had little kids come down at 2 and 3 am and want to swim.

Actully had one parent get mad at me cause I made there daughter, 9 years old, go back up and get mommy to come down with her so she could swim.
"I let my daughter swim by herself all the time.". I said "im sorry maa'm but you have to be with her or she has to be at least 15 to swim by her self. ".

Wow. And people wonder why their kids turn out the way they do. This should be shocking and it IS shocking but unfortunately I think its the norm these days and thats really sad. It used to be, parents were with their children at every waking moment.

Being a parent comes with responsibility and I don't see any of these adults as being responsible.

I don't know when the values, family values, in this country changed, but it was definitely for the worse. Kids are younger and younger these days, taking care of themselves all day while mom and/or dad works and these kids need guidance.

My kids are 15 and 11 (two 11 year olds; twins) and while they *can* fend for themselves, I prefer to be an active role in their life. Yes, I work (I'm a single parent btw) but I spend more time with them than I think they'd like me to sometimes, lol.

Whats so awful about this whole situation you described, is God forbid something should ever happen to a child in this hotel, the very first thing that would happen, would be a lawyer being retained and the parents sueing the hotel for whatever reason.

Parents - PLEASE be responsible for your children.

When I was younger, I never understood some places having a law that made the parents responsible for a childs actions....like if a couple of teenage boys went out and spray painted say a new house under construction and they got caught. Well, now that I'm older (and hopefully wiser) I totally agree with that....parents SHOULD be held responsible.

Its time to quit making excuses and get back to taking care of business.....

Good luck to you and bravo for trying to parent these kids from afar......:)

I use to work at holiday inn and I know what you are talking about it seems like parents would have more concern when there at a hotel because a child could get snatched up or some thing. We use to have to call police because parents would get a hotel for there kids birthday party and would leave to go to do there thing. Parents seem not to care any more. I accually had a child get the crap beaten out of her by some other child and where were the parents oh there down the road at the bar having a good old time. need to hire P.S full time just for hotels.
Are Security Gaurds always got chewed out because they were harrasing children. NO there doing there job because Rules are posted for a reason.

You did the right thing. Parents are constantly allowing kids to do too many things by themselves. I won't even allow my kids to play outside alone without me checking on them every 5 minutes.
The hotel itself is responsible for anything that happens to anyone on its property (as long as it is reported within a reasonable amount of time). All children should have a parent with them at all times. The next time you encounter a parent that is digruntled because you tell their child that they can not swim unless they have an adult accompany them, ask them how they would feel if their child drown in the pool, and you had no idea who/where their parents are..... That should make them think about it.

Start finding out who the guests are and if they refuse to comply with the rules the establishment has every right to kick them out. Tell your supervisor. I think it is VERY rude. I have had similar happen only I was a guest at a hotel and the people above me were letting their kids jump on the bed and bang on the walls into 4 and 5 am!!! I needed to be up at 7 to be back onthe road!!! I called the manager twice and both times they told me that police were on the way and I wasn't the only one calling them about those people. They finally quit at 5 am, but people just have no respect for others anymore.

I am with you on this one!! I don't think that parents that are "care less"( yes I mean they could care less what their children do) with their children have ever known what it is like to lose a child--in death, kidnapping or any of it. It is a sad thing that what it will take for some of these parents to actually pay attention to their children--is a tragedy. I would call the police, if you work there, I would think that it is with in your rights as a concerned employee to contact for safety, as I am sure that there is a "clause" in the signing of the hotel receipt that children are to be supervised at all times. It is a liability issue for the hotel. What is sad is that these parents won't care until it is too late!!!

I am sorry that you have to witness it, and that you are put in a position, where, if you call these children could lose their parents---and if you don't, something worse could happen to them.

The sad thing about this is if something did happen to those kids the first person that would lay blame on other people is the parents. I dont let my kids out of my sight no matter where I am. And the sad thing about it is if something did happen to those kids the irresponsible parent would be the ones to sue your company and probably win. Im in Australia and the most common thing here is parents going to the casino and leaving their kids in the car while they gamble. Its a sad sad world!!!!!

ALL TOO OFTEN, parents will take their kids to public places and expect the people who work there to babysit their kids. It's very sad, but true. It is not just society who pays for this, but later on, the parents will, too. These are the types of children who later on will end up in jail because of the lack of boundaries set for them. they are already being taught that the rules don't count; so they will continue this until they are no longer teachable, and then society will have to correct them, because their parents never did.
