Are we smart because we're atheist, or atheist because we're smart?

It is said that atheists IQs are slightly higher than religious people....but some how that's not surprising...is it!

A bit of both. We're atheist because we're smart enough to not get suckered into religion. But conversely, in some areas we're smart because we don't question the religious morality of certain ideas.

Actually, that second bit's not really true, it's just common sense, not atheism that helps us out there.

maybe you're smart, maybe you're not - being smart isn't necessarily a pre-requisite for atheism. If you're only atheist because all the people you know are atheist and because you're afraid of standing out from the rest, then you're no better than the christian "sheep" you despise so much.

People require different things in life. Some people need to question everything and find out the answers for themselves. Other people just want to follow other people's lead. The great thing about life is that we are all different - if everyone was a leader then there would just be pandemonium. We need sheep *and* leaders in this life - neither one is better than the other. Accept yourself and other people for who you and they are, and the world will be a better place.

I'm not so sure that we are smart! Because when I look around me, I see such a lot of design in nature that makes me wonder "Who the hell did it!" someone or entity had to design all this! Who hollowed out bird's bones to make them lighter so they'd fly? who designed the optic nerve and eye so that we all see? who designed the skeletal frame so we can walk, run, and jump? It's an engineering marvel in it's own right! How about the heart and blood system with all those valves and cardio- vascular systems to keep our blood pressure constant throughout our bodies? Something just had to have designed them! They just didn't happen on there own? Engineering marvels just don't appear, so who or what is responsible? So if we take religion out of the picture as all Atheists do, we're still left with this puzzle, who or what? It makes you think doesn't it? Have a great day.

I'm atheist because I'm a free-thinker. I like to think that is a smart decision. Many Christians are smart and I've seen them on here. The opposite is true, too.

I think we are atheist because we're smart. I was raised a fundie but I changed because I am smart enough to see through it.

I don't think that intelligence necessarily leads to atheism. Instead it leads to the ability to think outside the limitations of a literal interpretation of religious texts.

If you mean that you're smart because you think it's stupid to worship anything... then you're not smart. You're cynical.

I'm Christian, and despite what most people believe about Christians is that not all of us critisize what others believe.

I don't. But you obviously do. Maybe you should start believing in karma: Do good, and good with do onto you. Do bad, and bad will do onto you.

It's one thing not to believe anything, but it's another to critizcize those who do.

You're not smart cuz that was actually about the dumbest question I've answered.

The two are not mutually co-dependent, so it's not a valid relationship to judge.

Statistically however, atheists have significantly higher IQs and educational qualifications across large populations than theists.

Quite simply, you're atheist because you're atheist. Being smart (or otherwise) has nothing to do with it.
