I got prescription antibiotic drops a day ago, but every time I use the drops my ear gets completely plugged up and starts hurting even worse! I went to the ER tonight and got a different kind of drop along with an oral antibiotic and Vicodin. Still no relief, no sleep. Even two Vicodin doesn't take the pain away! My left ear canal is completely swelled shut. Can’t move my jaw or even touch the left side of my face without pain. Left ear is throbbing and warm to the touch. Why aren’t the antibiotics working and why do the drops make the pain worse? This is horrible!

Got an emergency appointment to the ENT clinic this afternoon. Had my canal sucked/cleaned out and a wick inserted. When he inserted the wick I let out a yelp and flailed my arms. Worst pain in my life! At least the pressure is slightly better now.

From the color of the drainage, the ENT specialist concluded that the bacterium was a different variety and that it was resistant to the previous antibiotic. I had my meds switched from ofloxacin drops and cephalexin capsules to ciproflox/dexameth drops and levofloxacin pills. Have my fingers crossed that this combo will actually work.

Anyone else had an infection that was resistant to the normal antibiotic treatment?

She's suffered this for a year and a half, and she's 10 years old in dog years, while most dogs live up to about 15 years old. There might be a way, because I'm thinking that it's more of a bacterial than yeast infection. I recommend that you hire/find an expert to bring your dog to, or let some scientists find the cure and what kind of disease this is. It might take a lot of time, money, and effort but you'll help your dog. If you decide not to do any of this, have nice last days with your dog and but him to sleep.

Antibiotics will kick in soon. It'll take 24 hours or so to start working in your body.
I can't believe the doctor isn't more aggressive if it's that bad. When I had a severe case like that, they gave me that 5-day antibiotic regimen and it worked. They said the infection had gone from my ear down to my glands, neck etc, and I know how painful it was! You tried warm compresses? Log on to WedMd.com with body affected and symptoms. Sometimes they give you what treatments work for relief. Also just remembered, the ear doctor flushed my ear after using the drops for awhile to clean it out. Ask them. Good luck!

I am surprised they gave you drops at first. The oral antibiotic should help you in about a day. If it were me, I wouldn't take the drops til the swelling lessens.

If you can put an ice pack on that side of your head - it should help with the throbbing. Hopefully that Vicodin will kick in soon.

And call the doctor in the morning...

Sorry - that must be completely painful!

It can take a few days for the antibiotic to kick in but because of the problems with the drops I would recommend getting back in touch with your doctor to let them know what's going on. I don't know what time it is where you are right now but I would recommend calling the doctor's after hours line to find out if the doctor is on call to see if you can come in this a.m. for further evaluation.

What fool gave you eardrops? Antibiotics need to be given systemically - by mouth or by injection. You need to go to the nearest urgent care clinic or hospital emergency room for proper treatment - NOW, not later - to prevent permanent damage. Go on, get treated and worry about paying for it later. Go on. GIT!
