One big reason was World War I. Germany was made to pay reparations (basically saying "it's our fault"). This practically bankrupted the country and screwed up the economy. People took armloads of marks to buy a loaf of bread. And the army thought that they could have won WWI, only that the politicians had lost the war for them (even though this was done to prevent the invasion of Germany and save German lives). This lead to the rise of the Nationalist Party (Nazis). Once Hitler was elected, he started violating the Treaty of Versailles and instituted programs to reinforce German pride. This also lead to persecution of the Jews in Germany, and later throughout Nazi occupied Europe (eventually leading to the death of at least 6 million Jews and another 6 million other "undesirables" in concentration camps and slave labor camps) . Part of the treaty violations was the massive buildup of a state-of-the-art (by 1930's standards) military machine. New weapons and tactics. And a really big army.
The French and Enlish, on the other hand, thought that they could stop the German army, after all, they had their Maginot Line ( a huge defensive line running most of the border between France and Germany). Unfortunately, the Germans had developed a new style of warfare which made massive static defenses obsolete.
And the Germans wanted this little strip of territory, Alsace-Lorraine, that they said was theirs, even though the people there speak French.
Basically Hitler got Germany so proud and confident that they thought that they could win. The classic reason for starting a war.

The Germans, led by Hitler, started World War II because:
1. The Germans wanted to regain the land they lost in World War I.
2. Hitler wanted to preserve German (Aryan) blood in places where Germans were a minority like Poland and Czechoslavakia.
3. Hitler thought the Germans needed "breathing room" and invaded Poland, Czechoslavakia, and Russia to create more land for the German population.
4. Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews, Gypsies, and Slavs inferior and wanted to take their land and put Germans on it.
Myths that some other people who have answered this question believe:
1. Hitler was not a Christian, though he was raised a Catholic in Austria.
2. Hitler started the war just to get rid of the Jews. Hitler himself thought he was a quarter a Jewish (he probably was) and the idea to attempt elimination of the Jews came late in World War II when it seemed likely that the Germans were going to lose.

The Germans under Hitler decided there was not enough room in Germany and wanted to expand their borders, claiming back the "Free State of Danzig" in Poland, also the area where ethnic Germans were living in Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Memmel land.
Of course this was just an excuse to compensate Germany for having to pay so much in WW1 War reparations for the damage she caused the British French Belgiums in WW1.
The Jewish solution was just a pretext to confiscate Jewish property in Germany, at first to fund the Nazi Party and its thugs, this was then carried over into occupied lands.
To stop the Reds (Communists) was the excuse to drive into Russia and the East.

They were many reasons, like they were shamed they lost WW1, they, as was the world, were involved in a Great Depression. The mark was severely devalued and it took a wheelbarrow of money to buy a loaf of bread. Society became a hand to mouth thing and their sense as a nation of where they were was offended. Hitler found a ready audience, preaching economic recovery by blaming the Jews for all of Germany's problems, after all, to their thinking it couldn't be their fault, it must be someone elses, and Europes perennial whipping boy for anything from plague to humiliation in war, to economic disaster of global proportions must be Jews. So Hitlers hate-filled words fell on ready ears. He told Germans what they wanted to hear, that they were natural leaders of a great nation meant to rule the world for a thousand years. It was a vile form of patriotism that is over and above what is meant by that fine word.

Hitler didn't like the Jews, so he decided he wanted to kill them all. And to the first poster, you're clearly an ignorant fool. Keep trying. And clearly you don't fully understand the word "jihad".

Hitler, the anointed of God was trying to wipe out communism. Sadly the rest of the world with few exceptions chose to fight on the side of satan. Pretty sad really since the commies killed more than Hitler could dream of.
