What I was taught is that if one accepts the Lord Jesus he or she will go to heaven, but that doesn't give us a free ride to continue to do bad things to others and that in my humble oppion would include our pets.

You are not the sharpest word I've heard from God.
We read the same book.
It is clear from that book that you MUST become a new creature in Christ born of Spirit AND your old nature must pass away (that means die).
Your behavior is based ONLY on your nature. Nothing else.
Jesus taught that thinking a thought of envy or lust was the same thing spiritually as doing them physically.
It isn't what you do that damns you it's what you think.
When you first come to God and don't understand you'll try to ACT like a child of God but you are not a Child of God.
This is the mystery that vast multitudes fail to learn because no one teaches it and if someone tries someone else, someone like you, will hinder their work.
People like you are obstacles to the work Jesus wanted performed on earth.
It is not your job to speak of accountability. Only God has authority to judge.
Your father is, as always, Satan.
To begin the process of Spiritual birth one must court God, you have to build trust and intimate love this opens the door for the spiritual birth.
If you were a spiritual man I'd be in trouble for hating what you are but you aren't anything more than a hypocrite.
You will be held accountable for your approach to God.
The pansy "Love" Christians you despise are a curse to the likes of you but any one of them is worth more than all the Christians in the world that are like you.
You know them by the fruit they bare.
Children of God do not sin because it doesn't occur to them to sin.
Silly interpretations of things people turn into sin is wrong too and people will be held accountable for what they teach.
A silly interpretation is deciding that someone who smokes doesn't know God, but Jesus said it isn’t what goes into a man that defies but what comes out.
I don't smoke but hate those that make this a condition of salvation for other people.
So anyway go follow this god of “not love” you’ve created and be like all the other Christians caught in the traffic jam to hell.
EDIT: Martin S has it correct even though he hasn't the ability to articulate thought for himself....If you don't believe me then believe Paul.

Gee, are you a UCC'er who preached about sin and got yelled at for it? That happened to me. I preached a sermon on Romans 1 and preached about how God is not pleased with all the adultery, pornography, murder, homosexuality, etc. I did say that He is merciful and wants us to repent so that we can be with Him in heaven, but I was told you cannot preach about sin because it depresses people; people come to church to hear about salvation, not about sin. Well, my question is, what are we being saved from? It's like a doctor giving you a prescription for an antibiotic, but not telling you what it's for.
No, it's not true that there is no accountability with God; you're right. Just read the messages to the churches in Revelation.

Aside from being a loving and merciful God, He is also just. And those who choose not to follow Christ will be accountable for every single thing they did in this life.

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.
8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

God is love. See 1 John 4:8. Apparently, I have offended you with another post. Then, I stupidly got offended by something you said about me in another question. I truly apologize for getting offended, and also for offending you (if indeed I did) So, let us start over and speak the truth in love, ok?
Of course there is the accountability issue to deal with. But no one is accountable to me, or to you. Only God. And there is no man nor woman who has not sinned. Thank God, though, that through the Blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven. Just like the blood the lamb that was put on the doorposts of the Israelites at the very first passover, Jesus Christ is our Passover Lamb. That's why He is called the Lamb of God.
It is not up to me or you to judge who loves God and who doesn't. God knows our hearts better than even we do. Do you remember the story of the woman who got caught in the act of adultery, and a bunch of people brought her to Jesus to see what He thought about it?
John 8:3-11 "And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."
These are the words of Jesus Christ Himself. Yet, according to the law of Moses, an adulterer should be stoned to death. But, Jesus Christ, who is God incarnate, did not stone her. Was He showing her love? Did He condemn her? Do you think she went to hell?
The Old Testament was written for our learning, to teach us what is required by a just and holy God. It was our schoolmaster. But now Christ has come and fulfilled the law, died for OUR sins, and risen again. And now there is no more condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
The "love gospel" is righteous. In fact, it IS the Gospel. John 3:16 says "For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Read 1 Corinthians 13. The Apostle Paul said that if we (and I'm paraphrasing to save space, go read it yourself) do all sorts of "good" things for God, and do not love, we are NOTHING. He wrote that faith, hope, and love abide, and that the greatest of these three is love. Also, different TRUE Christians interpret doctrine in different ways. The reaction a person of strong faith is supposed to have to this is found in Romans 14. Read the entire chapter. So long as a person confesses that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and believes in his heart that Christ is risen from the dead, he shall be saved.
Here are some verses you can study as well, and you should read them in context in order to fully understand their meaning.
Romans 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Ephesians 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
2Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
1John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
1John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
I hope that you understand that, if you are a Christian, you are my brother. I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way. But, I do my absolute best to speak the truth concerning our Lord, Jesus Christ. And it's not up to me, or you, or anyone else to judge another man's servant. It is to the Lord Jesus Christ that we stand or fall, and we will stand, because He will hold us up. Peace.
