A potato chip. Especially Baked Lays. Soooooooo good!

First, for the dumb Americans, there is only one kind of "chip" and that is a "potato chip". The "chip" was invented in the UK and goes well with fish. The chip also goes well with a burger, which was invented in Hamburg, Germany and not invented in the US as dumb Americans believe. What dumb Americans call "French Fries" are actually thin "chips" and have no association with France or the French whatsoever. What the dumb Americans call "chips" are in fact, crisps. "Crisps" were invented in the UK and not the US. By changing the name of a product does not give the right to claim it's origin. A "chip" will always be a "chip" and a "crisp" a "crisp". As "chips" don't have flavours, I'll give my best crisp flavour. The best flavour has to be the good old "Salt and Vinegar" followed by "Prawn Cocktail" and 3rd has to be "Tomato Sauce". As for the dumb American that has been reading history books, upside down, your facts are incorrect. The first reference associating any fried potato to the US, is in the 1850s. An American complained that his "fried potatoes were too thick". It is further said that the chef "sliced the potatoes thinner". Therefore, it could not have been referring to the Great British Chip. It has to be referring to the "pom frite" which was a "French Fried (sliced and not chipped) potato. One other point,,the pom frite is actually a "saute" potato and is par boiled before being sliced and shallow fried, as they still do today. The American Fries (french fries) are also "saute" as they are also part boiled and then deep fried. The Great British Chip is not cooked twice. It is deep fried from it's raw stage until cooked. Also, although dates are not known to the exact, it is common knowledge that "deep fried chip shops" (say that without a chinese accent LOL) were in existence in the North East of England during the early 1950s. Deep fried fish warehouses were trading in East London and the South East of England. Your reference of the first chip shop is, in fact, a reference to the very first "Fish and Chip" shop. As neither the "pom frit" or the "frie" have any resemblance to the British chip, in the method of cooking, the Great British Chip stills stands as being invented in the UK. The US did not develop the french frie until much later as they were actually cooking pom frites.

Potato Chip. There are a couple places I know that make home-made potato chips. Love them. Sometimes I just get an order of them to go. Lay's chips are good too, but nothing beats a fresh "still warm" potato chip. If I did get Lay's, I am partial to Barbecue flavor.

The "chip" itself was not invented in the UK. The UK coined the term "chips" for potatoes fried that way, but the potato was fried in that form in other countries such as France, Belgium and America before it was in the UK.

From 1813 on, recipes for what can be described as French fries, occur in popular American cookbooks. By the late 1850s, one of these mentions the term "French fried potatoes."

But, the first "chip" fried that way in Britain was apparently on the site of Oldham's Tommyfield Market in 1860, long after they were popularized in America, and several years after they were called "French fries" here.

So, we "dumb" Americans have at least as much right to call them "French Fries" as the folks in the UK have to call them "chips".

My favorite chip is the gold old plain potato chip.

In America, I love crunchy Cheetos, but in the UK I can't get Cheetos, so I love Walkers (which is owned by Lays) Tomato Ketchup flavored chips. They kind of remind me of barbecue flavored chips, but I love em. I know that sounds gross, but they are really good.


To Tina, I love Sun Chips too, haven't had those in ages!!

nothing beats those thin spindly chips that you get from McDonald's, Burger King or KFC. The big chunky ones just leave your mouth dry. LONG LIVE THIN CHIPS!
