Yes,he shud be! Agreed,he didn't intend to hurt anyone, but, possessing an illegal weapon was and is a crime and is prohibited under the IPC and Arms Act. If he was tht innocent, then why did he ask his friend to destroy the rifle after the Mumbai blasts? Ideally,he shud hav surrendered them to the police.
He was held for two crimes 1.Possessing an illegal weapon
2.Trying to destroy it.
As per the law, this wud have invited a minimum of 12 yrs of imprisonment (6yrs for each). But the court granted him concurrent(joint) imprisonment, not consecutive. Had the latter been granted,he wud hav been in for 12yrs.
A crime is a crime,no matter how big or small. He may have bcum a good boy later on in his life or may have repented. But tht holds no value in this forte.Ignorance of law is also not an excuse.
Had he been let off lightly, then sum other rich spoilt brat may be encouraged to keep another illegal weapon(this time it cud be an atom bomb instead of a rifle) in his house, under the pretext tht he's not going to harm anyone.Wud tht be fine too?
Dutt was rightfully punished.Kudos to Judge Kode !!
Dear Rob, what you said is true.Justice is not done in many high-profile cases. But,the reasons for the same are many. The cases are usually left hanging, mainly due to lack of solid evidence. But,that does not mean tht a case like Sanjay's (where all proofs are crystal-clear and the accused has pleaded guilty) should also be let off lightly.Judiciary is the only system in India, where bribing and corruption does not work.Let's be happy tht atleast one (among many) case has received a fair judgement.

If India conducted justice and fairness in all cases I would have no complaints. But that is never the case.
There are lot of high profile people in India who never receive an equitable punishment - they are still in the news.
Justice is a far cry in India. It is like approaching zero from infinity. However we do need zero tolerance for all kinds of crime.
It would be nice to know if somebody published a comparative table to show whether justice was done in this case or not.

IF he planned on hurting someone, yes.... He was a hunter as far as I remember and if this is the same bollywood actor I'm thinking about, he had hunted some "protected" species.
But, I don't think he should be punished with 6 years of prison time! Geez-oh-man, you'd have thought the guy had shot a friend in the face (on accident??) while hunting with the vice president or something!

Ginger
