The best, most realistic and achievable remedy to this "problem" Is for the United States to stop using it's economic might to interfere in the internal affairs both economic and political of South American countries. U.S. policies including most recently NAFTA have set out with the stated aim of aiding the Mexican economy but have in fact destroyed it to provide labour for U.S. companies at poverty wages. This economic collapse is what fuels the flood of immigrants to the U.S. desperate to escape that poverty. It's a two edged sword as the American people see jobs of an ever increasing skill level dissapearing to U.S. companies in Mexico whilst Mexicans immigrating to America take up manual jobs at wages unattractive to Americans. The only winners are the big corporations. If you search on YouTube there are some fascinating interviews on the subject with Noam Chomsky. Well, there's a number of possibilities. But here's what I think is going to happen (and I do think its about the best we can hope for, givent the logistical and economic realities):

First, a recap:

>Bush proposed a conservative reform bill--and the neocons in Congress scuttled it.

Now--in 2009 we will get an immigration reform bill--a far more liberal one. It will include amnesty and a guest worker program.

The neocons will pitch a fit. Too bad--they had well over a decade to deal with the problem--and chose to do nothing.

The best way to deal with the illegal Latinos in my mind is to catch them, do a back ground check, and if they have a clean background...then MAKE THEM LEGAL!!!! The Hispanic immigrants outwork most Americans in those positions that we American's, think we are too good to do, or too lazy too do. ie: Washing dishes, picking produce, gardening, cleaning tables and floors, etc.

I am an American female, lived 30 years in California, and can tell you, in most cases, depending on the job, I will gladly hire a Latino immigrant.

I now have lived 2 years in the Middle East, and in comparison to the Arabic employees (sorry Arabs... and I am married to an Egyptian by the way ), the Mexicans, Central and South Americans are far superior in terms of loyalty, dedication, honesty, plain old common sense and respectful courtesy.

This is JUST MY OPINION people. I am happy living in the Middle East, and mean no insult to my fellow Arabic communities, and I am only speaking from my personal interactions in the Arabic work force. I am just calling like I see it. Please note that my opinion is reserved for those Latinos that fall into the discussed category, not the drunken, drug dealing, drive by types. (That should have gone without saying) And as for the American workforce, I hold the highest of respect for it. I believe we are the most sophisticated of the discussed, my negative comments above on Americans...again include only those that fall into the arrogant or lazy category.

It is a question of convienience for us, where else are we going to find someone to do all of our menial stuff for close to nothing, Nah, I'm sure our Govt has had alot to do with our lax border enforcement but now that we are looking for an easy scapegoat in the "illegal alien" is right there baby. I'm all for kicking any felon out or illegal entry type, just be consistent from now on and don't whine when your food prices go through the roof cause ya can't find anyone to do it for cheap. Oh and just because we think its wrong for illegal immigrants to come here does not mean that we are racist. Illegal immigrants get help and they don't deserve it. The taxpayers pay for people who shouldn't be here in in the first place.
