Many European slave traders in the Caribbean had my last name, Beruvides, and I want to change it due to background checks with employers (many Google/Yahoo your name). Many historians I've talked to have verified the history of my last name. What is the legal process to do this? I don't want this to affect my career for the next 40 yrs!!!! Thanks!

You can easily change it. Go to your courthouse and they will do it, but they will charge you.

Sure.

The process is fairly simple in most countries (or US states).

In the US, you go to your local county courthouse -- there will be a form you can fill out. The cost is usually under $100, often less.

You may need to appear before a judge -- that's just a standard filter to make sure you're not trying to use the name change to avoid criminal charges or commit fraud. Just answer simply and honestly as to your reasons.

But I don't think it would have any effect on your career.

Keep the name. Adds color to your family history. My Grandfather, in the very early 1900's, killed some guy under questionable circumstances. My wife's Great Grandfather was hung as a horse thief in the Dakota territories. I still managed successful 40 odd year career in law enforcement.

You could probably keep the last name...most employers don't have a prejudice against the history of one's last name. 80% of the companies I have applied for have asked if I have been known by any other names previously, so it might be kinda redundant to change yours.

Keep your name. Employers know better than to think you are a slavetrader. Most last names will come up with some bizarre history if you google them.
