Prozac is a popular anti-depressant. Many anti-Mormons seem to think that, a. an over abundance of Utah women (meaning Mormon women, of course!) take prozac more than any other group, so therefore, the Mormons make people crazy. (IOW, LDS women feel more pressure to be perfect, and when they can't, they take prozac to keep from killing themselves or something)
However, another way of looking at this is, that maybe (IF it's true that more LDS women take prozac than any other group), this just means that LDS women are more apt to want to treat their depression in a more realistic manner than non-LDS Christian women (who are taught that depression is something that only JESUS can cure and if you aren't cured, then you obviously haven't given your life over to Christ, or something like that; or that, if you have "given your life to Christ" there's NO WAY you can ever GET depression; both of which are coppy pock)

People relate it to the church because they want to shed a negative light on the church. None of the studies provide any reason or evidence that could explain the high rates, only that Utah has a high prescription rate. So we don't really know why it is high. It is equally shocking for me that Maine and Oregon are at the top - I have spent time in Oregon and it is one of my favorite places.
Now, in Utah, the Mormons are a little different, and it isn't just the Mormons. People in Utah are very competetive and very much always trying to top their neighbors (beat the Joneses). I think it is because many of the communities are so close-knit and everyone knows what everyone else does and has (there are so many Mormon churches and therefore the associations are small and tight).
Another explanation, and why some Mormons may be depressed, is not so much because they feel they aren't meeting expecations or that God will not be pleased, but because to be service minding is so important in the church. People do so much for others and they sometimes feel like they are never the object of someone elses service - essentially they are in the perfect environment to breed co-dependants (and thus depression).
These are just my opinions, but I think they are pretty close.
God bless.

Prozac is an anti Depressant. Some people say that there are a high number of LDS people taking it. I am not sure if that is true or not. They never quote their sources. They also never say how many non LDS people take it.
I guess the theory is that so many LDS women take it because the drive to be the perfect little home maker is just too much, so we all get depressed that we aren't perfect.
Edit**
I guess someone did quote their sources this time.
Mormon 4 Jesus- Great answer I never thought of it that way.

Prozac is an anti-depressant that when it first came on the market was also showing to be a marvelous weight loss drug. However, they found VERY quickly that if the person taking it was not depressed then it made them depressed and often caused suicidal thoughts and even a few people committed suicide. It is one of the strongest anti-depressants on the market. Now why they tell us to get on it, I will never know. I've been LDS all my life and the only time anyone could have said that I was "depressed" was after an assault, but that's to be expected and I never took any drugs because of my depression, I just got over it.

properly, i'm no longer Mormon, so i can not say. in spite of the undeniable fact that they might sense that it somewhat is having a undesirable result on the rustic, and so that's important positioned money into battling it. i'm going to play the two components of the fence here. initially, no longer legalizing gay marriage isn't the comparable as outlawing it. It in basic terms ability you're no longer calling it marriage. i think of that gays will flow on having the comparable rights in California. on the different hand, why make investments lots money on pushing proposition 8, whilst there are different concerns that are so important? Now it somewhat is a robust question. little ones are literally ravenous to loss of life suitable on our continent - between the main harsh deaths possible - and we are contributing to that throughout the time of the process the abuse of the multinationals. If the money positioned into battling gay marriage have been positioned into getting politicians to tension international companies to handle their workers somewhat in different international locations till now being allowed to sell in ours - properly, there could be an incredible distinction in many lives in Latin u . s . a . and someplace else immediately. so lots extra important than the question of no be counted if gay marriage might desire to be known or no longer, is the question of what are we doing concerning the authentic desires in this worldwide? Why do no longer we combat against the worst iniquities? (by utilising the way, did you be conscious of that the foremost explanation why God destroyed Sodom became using fact of their scientific care of immigrants and of the susceptible?) So a lot of conservatives are coaching authentic "Sodomy"!!!! and that they are no longer doing it anonymously in low-value hotel rooms the two. they are doing it out on the open marketplace.

I believe its cos ppl in Utah take anti - d pills such as Prozac more per capita than other states in the US. Not sure if its higher per LDS member vs other ppl.
But this is my theory - it is expected that you should always be happy as a LDS member and that can be why they may feel the pressure to take anti depressants.

Prozac is a member of the SSRI family of antidepressants. Other than that, I don't understand the question.
EDIT: To the answerer above: That's interesting, do you have any more information on this?

Because Church is so boring and depressing. Prozac is an anti-depressant. So naturally, they work together in tandem.
