My parents worked full time. I grew up mainly at my grandparents house. My grandparents lived at the beach. They had a whole room as a library. I read any book I could get my hands on, adult books, everything. I spent many time outside in the country beach playing alone. I spent time thinking up fairy tales and pretending I was characters out of books I read. I used to ride my bike everywhere and be back before dark. I spent much time alone and with the horses that lived near my place, and my horse. When my parents finished work, they drank a lot. My mother had an affair and the man was always over making her drunk and trying to take her pants off. My dad got abusive at times and wrecked the house and hit my mother. My brothers started drinking and smoking at 13 and got into big trouble all the time. Am I normal?

Why wouldn't you be? Your life, character and personality as a whole is affected by your family, the way you grew up and the society that surrounds you but it is YOU who ultimately decides who and what you want to be. All of us have different family situations that we grew up in but it is our choice on whether we want this to affect who we become later in life. Your mom chose to have an affair, your dad to drink and be abusive at times. Even your brothers chose to drink and smoke at an early age and your grandparents to let you be who you want and choose what you want.
We make our own choices. Only you can determine if you are "normal" in your own standards :)

Every family has skeletons in their closets.. you are normal..
Just try to be happy, and live your lifee the best you can. That is what everyone else does. Be thankful that you had grandparents that raised you.some people are not that fortunate. Good luck.

There is no such family like the "Leave it to Beaver" family. You sound alot like me. Nothing is ever normal! Nothing is perfect, but u sound like u really had a good time with life other than the abusive family. The question is, are u happy?

I don't know about you, but your family sounds pretty disfunctional. Try to get to a therapist, so that it does not ruin your life. Do not use them as role models. Find some nice adults that you can admire and respect to use as role models in your life.

Yes...I think everyone has a different family background and no one should be judge based on that. Everyone has their own life story and problems. There's a secret behind every door, but when one door closes, another one opens.

Of course your normal.
Your childhood.. is a little off from other kids normal lives today.
But dont be ashamed of it!
Your fantasys kept you busy, and your books, and I actually found myself very interested in your childhood story.

I wouldn't say normal, I would say almost blessingly unusual. Reminds me of the movie... "matilda".
You are the type that learns from others mistakes well... you can see life in a big picture.
