Piercing yourself without the proper equiptment and knowledge is bad enough, but doing it to someone else?
Just take him to a professional studio, then all the equiptment is sterile and the piercer knows what theyre doing.
If you really have to do it, make sure you do enough research and know exactly where to pierce and get a real piercing needle, not some useless dirty old safety pin or sewing needle, they cause more harm than good.
On a side note, I really dont like advising people NOT to get pierced, but if its a choice between not being pierced or not having it done properly, I recommend not being pierced.

Definitely go to a professional. (IOW, a reputable tattoo parlor/piercing shop), and *not* Claire's or DIY. You always have a chance that it will turn out fine DIY, but the risk of infection and/or other complications is much higher due to there not being adequate sterilisation methods. Claire's uses piercing guns, which are also unable to be sterilised and use an action similar to a stapler. *ugh* (Anecdote: My sister's friend got her ears done at Claire's; they pulled through and now require scar-tissue-removal surgery before re-piercing.) Reputable piercers use single-use sterile needles for least risk of complications. It will cost some more, but well worth it.

Best advice? DON'T! If it's a lobe piercing, most places offer free piercing with jewellery purchase. So go to a jewellery store, pick up a pair of $10 earrings, and get them pierced by someone who is actually using a piercing gun. If it's cartilidge, take him to a professional. Unless you like the look of keloids (look it up on google if you don't know what they are), then don't risk it. Please.

Don't even try it yourself. It could result in very painful experiences and not to mention infection.
Just take him to some professional where it could be done under the supervision of someone very good with it.

What the hell is wrong with you???
