Could rising global temperatures mean more opportunities 4 exploration? Such as possible sea routes across the Arctic? Have u herd about Russia dropping a capsule w/ their flag @ the N. Pole? Also, will there b more opportunitys 2 explore resources, i.e. petroleum, hidden in permafrost or ice shelves, such as the poles and Siberia? In fact, I think Siberia does have a lot of petroleum & minerals, but the bad weather & maybe some mismanagement has hindered exploitation of such materials for Russia.

Exactly.
Make hay while the sun shines. Russia and Canada should exploit agricultural, forestry, and mineral resources while the getting is good...or at least easier. This should go for Alaska, too. If the past is any indicator, the melting of the Arctic ice cap may lead to a mini glaciation due to a slowing or shut down of the thermohaline conveyor. We may find ourselves in DIRE need of energy as harsh cold "sweeps" back in - it may take a century or two to hit those cold weather minimums.
And who knows, if the additional CO2 does have as drastic an effect on global temps, we may find ourselves burning carbon fuels to "warm" ourselves out of the coldest temperatures.

The latest research conducted in respect of the Arctic is that it's melting much faster than previously thought possible and as such could be gone completely in as little as 40 years. During the winter months ice will return and in cold years it will remain but in normal summer conditions there may be no mass of ice at all making it quite possible to open up new shipping routes.
Not heard about the Russians dropping a capsule at the North Pole although nowadays there are a whole load of flags there. It's now much easier to get to than ever before North Pole and a few weeks ago it was possible to go swimming there - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6899612.stm
The largest single human contributor to global warming is the use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), mineral extraction, mining, quarrying and related processes are another significant contributor. If we were to extract more minerals we would exacerbate the problem. Perhaps a better solution is to accept that a modern economy is reliant on power, light etc and to find sustainable alternatives.
Oil exploration and extraction isn't particularly hampered by bad weather and some fields which are currently being exploited are in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. Land based operations are preferable to sea based operations and if the opportunity presented itself to extract resources from Siberia, Canada etc then the oil companies would welcome this.
There are sizeable deposits beneath Canada which will undoubtedly be tapped in the future (there has never been an instance of drilling being permenantly stopped before and with resources running out it's not likely to happen in the future either).
There isn't so much potential for Siberia. Environmental and economic conditions are very different there and much power is in the hands of a few oil magnates, if there was scope for commercial scale exploitation it would have commenced many years ago.
Siberia does have massive deposits of methane trapped beneath the permafrost but this is found in the biomass spread over millions of square kilometres. As such it can't be tapped like conventional gas fields, if someone were to devise a large-scale, viable method of extracting the gas they would make a small fortune.
Further, such technology would be welcomed for it's environmental benefits as well as it's economic benefits. Global warming has recently melted one million square km of permafrost in Siberia leading to the relaease of vast quantities of methane into the atmosphere and thus further speeding up global warming. Anything that prevented the further release of methane would be welcomed.

Trevor if you believe in Global Warming get your swim trunks on. And, you will die of hypothermia The ice caps have been melting since the last ice age. The only caps which are melting are the ones in the water. And, not connected to land.
This winter watch when spring hits, what melts first? Ice on water. Then land melts. Put an ice cube in water watch it melt faster.
The footage you watch of ice caps collapsing are water based not land based.

Did you know that when Magellan circumnavigated the globe he carried with him a map that accurately depicted the shore line of Antarctica. Not the ice, the land mass. Makes you think doesn't it.

Global Warming does not have any real advantages for us.
Unfortunately to stop Global Warming would require that we reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to less than one tenth of what they are today world wide.
That amount of a reduction would destroy the economies of the world and is not realistic.
Although Global Warming is of no advantage to us, it is not realistic for us to expect that we can stop Global Warming.
