It sounds to me like TMJ Disfunction, I know all too well because I had it. Not a fun thing to have. It is a problem with your jaw joint. Try to relax that as much as possible, massage it, gently open your mouth and stretch it and when you chew, go easy (no really hard stuff).

You may want to seek out a couple of opinions with Orthodontists. I strongly suggest you take the least invasive method to try first, possibly a night guard to wear while you sleep so you don't grind your teeth.

holy cow! i have the exact samething and i play the flute [probably has no affect]. my jaw keeps poping and hurting a lot. when i open my mouth wide [like trying to bite into an apple] it feels like im over stretching it, like stretching a rubber band too far. Sometimes in the morning i cant quite open it that far. and in some cases i could barely open my mouth. to help with the pain, i just massage the joint area. it helps me hope it helps!

You could have intra-articular cratilage issues, or have inflammation indicating osteoarthritis. Get an arthroscope Go to http://www.oceansurgical.com.au/ to find out more
