If a natural disaster occured, would people be able to get their prescriptions?

I take several medications and even though I wouldn't die if I didn't have my medications I would be in a lot of pain. I always wondered if they brought you medication, or if you could go get it in another area not effected by the disaster, or would you just be SOL? Would they provide only to the ones that need the medication to live or would they provide to everyone? Or no one? Does anyone know what happens to people who have prescriptions in this situation?

In a disaster situation people with chronic pain would be a low priority. You would not be able to get meds to deal with chronic pain if people were dying around you. I am not trying to minimize your pain issues, but imagine this scenario. One person walks into an ER/pharmacy/whatever, and says, "I feel like I can't breathe", and another person walks in and says, "I've had this back pain for 3 years, and I need a refill". Who would you treat first? Sorry to say this, but as you put it, you would be SOL. This is especially true if you are taking controlled substances to control you pain, as the prescriptions cannot be filled in a different state (i.e. you could not just get away from the disaster to fill your scrip). I'm sorry to tell you if a natural disaster occurs at the same time you run out of your meds, you will be in pain until the rest of the community is physically stable. As horrible as this may seem to you, think about the big picture.

I just wonder who you think "they" are? I'm sure that if you were thinking of a pharmacy, "they" would try and reopen as soon as practical and get their prescription drugs up to speed as soon as reliable refrigeration was available or they had power generation and fuel to operate their refrigeration. As for disaster relief such as the Red Cross or the National Guard, their ability to supply medication is limited. Perhaps you could review how things panned out in natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, which was about as disruptive as one could expect a natural disaster to be.

You have to hope to god you have them with you when a natural disaster happens. Because unless your pain is killing you. In a great disaster like katrina. The kids, families and people dieng are getting out first. Unless your one of those you need to get some extra prescriptions to keep in a place you can reach them in case of emergency. But good idea thinking ahead.Unless you happen to see the future and there is a big storm headed our way...in that case please tell us!
