Spartans.
The phalanx of man-sized, rectangular, interlocking battle shields (not to be confused with the 1 M circular aspis shields) provided protection from the head to toe. The Samurai would have little effect at cutting through these heavy shields.
Both sides had devastating offensive weapons, perhaps the Samurai even have an edge on offence.
But the Spartans had vastly superior defense, even against arrows. And with their long Doru spears they could still kill opponents over and through their own defenses.
Interesting that it was a spear innovation (the Nage Nada) that was instrumental in the decline of the Samurai.

As much as I like Samurai culture, I would have to go with the Spartans. Their defense is just too good for the Samurai to penetrate. However if by some chance the Samurai broke up the Spartans defense and it came down to a sword fight. The Samurai with there speed would win hands down.
It is such a hard battle to call, maybe if some historians get together and produce a battle simulation...now that I would watch!

The spartan dories (spears) had much more range than the katana and the spartans had better armour. on top of that the phalanx was the ultimate in fighting formations until the advent of gunpowder and it was something the samuri would have no concept of. so unless the phalanx was disrupted or possibly flanked the spartans would definitely win, but flanking a phalanx was much harder than you'd think and there were ways for the phalanx to adapt to that. on top of that the spartans were trained since birth and were the most highly trained fighting force the world has ever seen. so if it came to individual combat they would still likely have the advantage.

300 Spartans.
Spartans, despite 300, wore full bronze armor and had even bigger shields. Plus spears, the Phalanx, and swords, not to mention training from the most advanced militaristic society ever created. Their armor would defeat the samurai' swords, and their spears would do damage just like they did to the Immortals, who had similarly weak armor.
Spartan Hoplites were the finest soldiers to ever exist before guns, samurai wouldn't stand a chance.

Samurai have better armor and weapons
Both are warrior born and breed, trained from birth to belong to a warrior culture, although I think the Spartans were more fanatical. But the telling difference is technology. The Spartans are limited to bronze and leather, the Japanese had fine steel.
The Spartans would make a fine showing in bravery, but their spear heads would be hacked off, their swords would be dented and their shields hacked to pieces. The armor used by both is remarkable similar, but the Japanese use more steel and have a tougher shell.
Put tanks up against infantry and usually the infantry gets smashed.

Spartans were called soldiers but were really warriors, warriors usually fight alone. the Spartans were used to, on occasion, fighting more than one opponent the samurai would call for an opponent of equal of higher ability; they would call out their name and accomplishments. the samurai sword, is hard iron on the outside and soft iron of the inside, the iron was folded. against common belief held by the inept laymen, the samurai could use their sword for thrusting as well as cutting(not slashing; slashing is violant and uncoordinated). the spartens however had weapons made of poor iron, the iron was forged. the spartans used swords, spears, short range bow and arrow, small sheilds, and leather/bronze armor. the samurai had swords, spears, haliberds(Naginata), Middling range bow and arrow(200 yards acurate, 400 inacurate), and all of which could be used skillfully on horseback.
you tell me, i have no idea.

it's easy. in japan, battles in big groups are fought by a soldeir or samurai finding an opposing soldier of the same rank, and then they fight it out individually. spartans work together as a group with their phalanx or whatever. spartans would win.

Spartans because of their "advanced" (for the time) battle strategies. though i think the samurai's would give them a run for their money.
