Someone said they don't get depressed anymore. So I would like to know if any studies have been done for or against this statement.

A refreshing question; the big anti-Mormon tactics is to use the statistics that supposedly say that Utah has the highest consumption o Prozac. This means, to them, that MORMON women have the highest use of prozac.

On the other hand, I saw a sign in front of a local baptist curch; forget the saying, but it implied that, if you "have Jesus", you don't need to take prozac, you wo' need anything

Mental illness can be a disease just like diabetes. Something in the body is not working like it should. It does happen to be the brain but it is not really 'mental' as much as it is chemical. Regretfully this can be hereditary so you do see it run in families of all religions. But since the LDS do seem to have larger families then some other religions you get a little bit higher number having this happen.

Now there is also mental illness that is really 'mental' do to experiences in a persons life. This type also can be treated with medication or counseling or a combination.

Depression can fit in either of these two groups. This is why the LDS church has social services for people who can not afford a private counselor or want one that has many of the same religious beliefs as they do. The LDS church acknowledges that mental illness is a very real issue in the world and it needs to be addressed by trained professionals. We do not expect our Bishops to be councilors for such issues anymore then we expect them to give medical advise to members in their ward.

Anyone who tells you that their depression was cured because they went to church I think does not suffer from clinical depression but more of the 'blues' that need something to fill a void and they get this from their church.

To pastorart:
Studies have been done. The result of the largest?
"Active Latter-day Saints Seven Times Less Likely to Commit Suicide"

To be fair, similar studies have been done on kids who are raised in other devoutly religious homes, and have shown to have a lower suicide rate than other groups around them as well. Not 7x lower, but 2-4x. It comes down to reinforcement of good parenting by an outside organization ie. a church.

Are Mormons immune to depression? Definitely no. Myself, I've had far less of an issue with it since I joined. There are times when depression can cause my mood or work performance to sag, but nothing like what I experienced when I was an agnostic for 11 years.

Everyone goes through their depression, but everyone deals with it differently. I won't use the term TRUE Mormons, I will rather use the term WORTHY Mormons. I trust that Worthy Mormons, when they are down turn to the Lord and God and seek comfort from him. And if they have the special opportunity of having a Temple, then they, like myself, visit the Temple where it's extremely peaceful you can lose yourself for hours, and dedicate yourself. No one is immune to Mental Diseases...it's a true fact. But the comfort of the Lord carries us in our dark times God Bless

No studies that I know -- I can only offer anecdotal evidence

When I did what I knew I should do -- my depression went away.

Now having said that I was depressed for years because I procrastinated doing what I always said I wanted to do -- (many things -- too many to list).

I also know that there are many in Utah depressed -- for what reason I do not have an answer.

Some is likely clinical and others it's procrastination like me.

Look, I feel blue a lot of times but the church is my only relief. If it wasn't for the church I think I'd be lost. Looking at my life, I don't know WHY I feel so down sometimes, I have great and cute parents, I have all I need, I have the coolest brother ever, but there are some things that are out of my hands... nothing material and that makes me feel down, but just to remember about God and the church makes my day. It is great ^_^
