I am from Chicago where meat was good! I always bought a rump roast and served it medium-rare. It was always 100% tender.

I now live in Arizona where meat is, ... well, just awful. I tried a few rump roasts here and they were so tough I had to actually throw them out. They were like leather.

Isn't a rump roast the best for a nice dinner roast, and I do not want anything like a chuck roast or a pot roast. I did try a rib roast from Fry's, Basha's and Safeway. They too were not very tender.

I have decided to spend a lot of money for a good roast at a speciality store and I want to make sure I get the best roast possible. Would this be a rump roast? My choices of stores are AJ's or Midwest Meats. This roast that I hope to buy will cost me over $40.00 for a small one.

It is so sad that I cannot buy good meat in Arizona. The meat at AJ's will be so very tender - it is not a good quality meat, but they poke the roast with hundreds of spikes to tenderize it.

HELP!

the types of roasts that you describe normally are the lesser types of meat. try a round roast bottom or top both are very good. best is the standing rib roast (expensive)

The meat is beef. It's not a special cut or anything, it can be a rump roast, bottom round, sirloin tip... You can buy any of these cuts at your local grocery. Now, if you are asking if there is a place where you can buy the meat & gravy already prepared, I don't think there is such a place. Your best bet would be to buy some sort of gravy mix and prepare it with some steak-ums or maybe even roast beef from the deli. But making a roast is not that hard, and making the gravy is just as easy -- even if you want to just use a mix.

Is this another story of what I got back home is better then it is where I am now? Like home sick?
You are now in the Wild West. We still raise Texas long horns on the range.
Things are not the same as they as were back in the civilized part of the USA. Watch out for the Indians. :)

OK, it was tongue firmly planted in cheek.

I don't know where in AZ you are but it sounds like the markets you have are really buying the cheapest meat they can find.
I find rump roast is a good cut of beef, I use it for BBQ or pot roast, as it tends to bit a bit tough.
I have never run into a rolled rib or round that was tough.
Cooked right chuck is more tender and more flavorful.
Try an eye of the round or London broil. Or, as was mentioned before, a standing rib, better known as prime rib.

I do all my shopping at Safeway and find their meat to be good. I live in California.
Look around for a market that advertises USDA prime or at least USDA choice beef.

But in case I forgot to mention, you are in the Wild West now so, watch out for the Indians. :)

Actually americas test kitchen checked it out and they saw that the discount clubs offered a comparable cut of meat at a fraction of the cost.
