She is a great cat - and loves attention - but sometimes we will be downstairs and she will just be upstairs crying so loudly. Is something wrong?

Thanks all - not in heat - she's been fixed for years - but senile - probably. that's what we thought.

If she is a younger cat, less than 10 years old, a checkup at the vet's is a good idea.

If she is an older cat, she may be suffering from a sort of kitty Alzheimers which causes her to get lost in her own house.

Or she may be losing her eyesight or her hearing, or both. She may get panicky because she doesn't know where you are and can't find you, and she may not be aware of how loud she is meowing.

She should get checked by a vet to be sure there is no treatable cause such as arthritis that might make her reluctant to follow you up and down stairs. There are drugs that can help with the loss of cognitive powers and calm her. There is no help for increasing blindness or deafness, however.

If she is old, now is the time to pay her back for being such a good pet by being patient with her and trying to reassure her and make her life less stressful.

Our cat does this when we are outside in the yard without him where he can see us out the window.( He is an indoor kitty only and always has been even prior to us owning him).He has to lay in a spot where he can see everyone in the house or he will pace.He has always been a people cat, and does not like being alone. She may just need reassurance that you are still around. Try calling her to come downstairs or upstairs with you.Our cat automatically follows us to whatever room we go to.

Assuming she is not in heat, I think you answered your own question. "Loves attention" may be why. What do you do when she cries? One other thought: I had a kitten who was deaf in one ear, so she could not find us by sound. She couldn't get a direction on where we were by what she could hear. If she didn't find us where she expected us to be, she would meow until someone found her.

It sounds like your cat is in heat and is calling for another animal or a mate they do this when they are in heat dont let her outside or she wont come back for days and will end up coming back with child or getting another cat knocked up. all you can do is wait it out it wont last long

She might be in heat , consider having her spayed. If she isn't spayed and she is in heat she will soon try very hard to get out of the house to find a mate.

My old fat cat does that too. I think he's just senile cause when we get up to see him he runs to his food bowl even though its full. Maybe your cat is senile too.
