Depends on the Department. Most Detectives opt for a weapon that is both concealable and comfortable. Compact and Sub -compact pistols such as the Glock mdl. 19, 23 or 27,28 seem to be popular. I carry a 27 when off-duty or when I work as a UC Officer at some Rock Concerts.
BTW Agent47, The Military went to Beretta 9mms so they were the same as other NATO allies. Special forces were
still issued mdl 1911's and now the Military is going back to the .45 caliber. I carry a Springfield .45ACP with the hammer back or "****** and locked" as a duty weapon. There are two separate safetys on the weapon, a grip safety and a manual safety lever. Plus there's the most important safety of all, keeping one's finger off of the damn trigger until ready to shoot!
A ".38 Magnum" WTF is that!?!?

The detective generally does not get any "special" sort of firearm, as they won't be doing any more shooting than a patrol officer. At most departments, one must first be a patrol officer for some period of time (usually 3 years) before being assigned to any special division (homicide is a separate division, and since a detective is a sworn position, this would fall under that 3 year rule).
Given the above, then, the detective would have (in most cases) already picked out/trained with/used their duty weapon while on patrol, etc., and probably isn't going to switch for any reason, especially given that there aren't going to be any "special" choices for the detective position.
In essence, it's going to be whatever firearm they're already carrying, which is usually a specific few guns, a large list of guns, or a broad classification of guns (.38's, semi auto's under 10 inches, etc.) based upon the department's policy on firearms issuance.
Hope that helps you.

Most detectives use the same duty weapon that uniformed officers are issued. In our department that would be the Sig P226. Some detectives and some of the females are issued the P229 on special request.
Some departments also allow officers to carry any weapon from an approved list (if they purchase it and can qualify with it.)

Tell us what state. Mostly Baretta M9s now. Same reason the Army went from 45s to 9mils, people see the open hammer on the 45 and they think it's a negligent discharge waiting to happen, so almost every department opts for m9s, despite the great reduction in stopping power.

the standards to allow any officer to hold can selection based on the airline. All airlines require you to take a sort on flying at a similar time as armed. some require you to be on respected accountability and function a letter out of your branch. Others would help you to hold off accountability. The Captain of the airplane has the superb say.
