Surely they would never have graduated from school if this had been their approach to all their text books!!

Faith causes blindness and intractability.

Wow! I got 10 "thumbs-down" already! Cool! I know alot of extremely enthusiastic Christians and they all seem to have one thing in common: an utter absence of reason, common sense, and logic. Faith, almost by definition, is the act of believing in something when there is no logical reason for doing so. This is why Secular Humanists like myself will never "win" any argument with the "True Believers" because they are immune to rational thought. The Bible is no more the word of God than is the assembly instructions for my kid's bike. Jesus never read it. You may choose to believe in what the Bible teaches, but you must at least acknowledge that your believe is unsupported by even the tiniest shred of empirical evidence. And no, don't worry about my soul. My heart is strong and my conscious is clear. I'm ready to face God...in whatever form He/She/It may take.

This is a good question, but was followed up with an insult that causes Christians to forget the teaching of Jesus in their Bible. (See some of the purported Christian answers above)

I am not a Christian, per se. I was raised in a Christian household, but after studying Buddhism and Islam, I have come to believe something that is somewhat a hybrid.

The Bible is a Great text. It is the best selling book in the entire history of the world. The Bible is not full of "nonsense" or "falsehoods." The Bible, in my opinion, is a book that gives direction of morality. I say, "Some people actually NEED Jesus."

It is not the Bible that has the distortions. The original Bible text gives clear stories and examples. It is the people who take from those stories and create their own interpretation of what is being said. This is what caused the Crusades. The same goes for Islam. The prophet Muhammad did not encourge "Jihad." Actually, The Quran speaks more of Jesus and Mary than the Bible!

So to sum it all up: The Bible is not the problem. The humans interpreting the Bible's teachings are the reason for confusion.

interior the previous 3 years i've got examine, from front to returned, and studied the Bible six situations (at the instant on kind seven). All of my Christian acquaintances examine their Bible on a on a daily basis foundation. do no longer comprehend what the wonderful stats are, yet in my own adventure I actual have got here across that extra do (and have) examine the Bible. the priority is that some Christians merely examine the hot testomony by way of fact they concentration fullyyt on the "Jesus thoughts" and not the full tale. that must be one clarification why a perfect learn on interpreting the Bible in its entirety would coach low numbers between Christians (?).

It is obvious you are not seeking the will of God by the attitude of your question; instead it seems you are seeking to somehow prove that it is any ordinary book. The true way to read -- rather, study the Bible, is to first willfully seek the will of God and pray for understanding of which passage you will study. Remember, God is our creator, and the Author of our faith in Him. So this book that has stood through hatred, burnings, destroyed by kings, despised by some but loved by most through generations, still stands today as the Christian's handbook -- the Word of God, the Spirit of the one and only true living, loving God of all we see and cannot see. Take the Bible as it is -- the will of God, then you will understand the meaning of which ever passage you choose to study. Try this, ok?

Many Christians have been listenning to their pastors rant on and on about the certain things that support their church's views about what the Bible should mean to it's parishoners. Oft times these people read right over the things that contradict their teachings when they attempted to do their own homework. Their minds are programmed to "ignore" what does not support their teaching. It is not their fault. Programming is a powerful instrument. Even the pastors are not at fault. This is where we as God wanted Creation to be right now. Keep up the good work and become a Forgive Affirmed Spirit.

I am christian.
I see nonsense in the bible yes. Who knows which stuff was supposed to be read as literal or what as parables?
I see a few distortions, events twisted to favor Christianity.
I see a few contradictions, but all of them can be loopholed rather easily and are not evidence against it.
Falsehood? Nope. I dont see any.

Dont generalize. I have looked at the claims of the bible and have made my own decisions on its authenticity.

The Bible was written more than 2 000 years ago. Its logical that their sense of writing style is so different than now a days. The Bible was written with lots of poetic metaphors, and other literature figures because so was the tradition.

The interpretation of this writings are personal, and not to be judged by anyone. Show some respect.

It's a little five-letter word called "Faith."

I hate that damn word. All the Christians play the Faith Card when backed into a corner and just claim that they're believers no matter what. The Bible, their Church, and Rush Limbaugh have poisoned their minds and have brainwashed them past the point of no return.

They're a lost cause. The light of "Faith" is blinding them to reason and logic.

The Orthodox, Catholics & Evanelicals view the bible as the Word of God while the Protestants view it as the witness of God.

Truly Lost Lady,
GOD sent HIS WORD. It is our job to read, study, and obey it. Unlike you, I have degrees in and Mathematics, Physics, Education. I have a BA and a Master's Degree from two rather decent Schools. My approach has been to be as objective and open as possible and to thoroughly study the material before I make any decisions about it. I am guessing that you are just the opposite. Have a nice day.
Thanks,
Eds

first off, most of what people call the "contradictions" are theological errors on their part. like "how can a God of love let people die?", when of course He offers you the chance to get to Heaven, He offers you help on dealing with the pain of death, etc. geez

and there's a lot I find nonsensical in the secular world that people tend to ignore. especially trends in human nature.

considering that when we point out inaccuracies in anthropolgy textbooks we are ridiculed, your arguement isn't that strong.
