This is a tonometer. It measures the pressure inside your eye. If the pressure is too high or too low the doctor will investigate the causes of the pressure anomoly. It is important to have pressures checked beucase there are several diseases, one called glaucoma that can steel your vision from you without many symptoms and is very highly treatable when caught early. The Air puf machine is a lot less worrysome than a Goldman tonometer that actually goes up and touches your eye physically. The drops they use for the Goldman burn my eyes. I would rather have the Air puff tonometer any day! I am sorry that they did not explain to you what it was and what it was doing I always explain this to my patients that have never had it done before. O^O

The puff of air is used to see what the pressure is in your eye. Too much pressure could mean that you have Glaucoma. Glaucoma could make you blind, but it is easily treated with eye drops if it is caught in time. So, yes it is necessary for the health of your eye.

It's to test for glaucoma by determining the intra-ocular pressure. But most eye doctors have switched to a different test which involves a numbing eyedrop and is much more comfortable to me. It's necessary for checking the health of your eyes.

Yes it is very very necessary. It tests your eye pressure to be sure you don't have signs of glaucoma. Glaucoma robs you of your eyesight and and increased pressure would mean you might be started it. It is NOT that uncomfortable so next time PLEASE let the doc do both eyes as it is a very important test. I would consider changing eye docs though if he didn't take the time to tell you WHAT he was doing and WHY he was doing it.

I used to work for the eyeglass business. It is very necessary-it's a test for Glaucoma, which is a build up of pressure within the eye which could cause you to go BLIND!!!! Suck it up or get used to HEARING life! I'm now a chef so I'm not B.S.ing you but I have been wearing glasses since I was 2(I'm 52 now)
