Is theology, as a branch of philosophy, an overly neglected subject? Is humanity in need of some new theological ideas?

It has been neglected far too much, in my opinion. My guess is that very, very few people know their own denomination's foundational creeds, catechisms, and confessions, if that denomination even has any. And the people flit from one congregation to another as if religion is one big shopping mall, with the "stores" not caring themselves what the customers know about their product.

Humanity is not in need of any new theological ideas. They can't handle the ones that they have.

Actually, theology is alive and well, it's just that the ordinary person, whether believer or not isn't interested in in-depth study. They would rather get their daily dose of pablem to help them feel good. There have been some great theological thinkers in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Catholic church has some great theologians, like the Pope.
