I once read in a parenting magazine that your supposed to ignore the word. When you give attention to ANYTHING they do, they pretty much do it more. Are you sure that's what he's saying though? When my son wants to say four or fork it comes out as that. same as shirt with the s word.

OK! I have this same problem. I hear it...I ask, "Did he just say F**K?", "Do I say "F**K?", "Where did he learn that??". This is what I do....divert it, when you hear it say.."Truck, do you see a big truck??", Then say "there go's a car"...push him into another direction. I don't make a big deal out of it , I personally think my boy doesn't understand what he is saying and he doesn't know good words from bad...they just keep on it until something else comes along...this is the prime learning time he just likes the sound of the word, are you sure he's not saying "Truck"?? That's the best you can do...just be happy he is saying something, even if it isn't the most attractive word. Good Luck Sister, I feel your pain!! LOL!

You're right he can't really understand what a bad word is.

I agree w/ the diversion idea. I was a preschool teacher, and would occasionally have to deal with this. We'd start singing DUCK songs, or asking where the dump/fire TRUCK was. If they said s*it, then I would sit... or complain that I did not want to sit, I wanted to hop.
Usually the words just sort of fade. But it really sucks when they're saying it and you don't want other kids to hear it and take it home too!!

My 2 year old was saying it, too. They pick up on everything you say, especially when they are first trying to talk and learning by imitation...everything is impressionable.

The best thing to do is ignore it... My son said it matter-of-factly from time to time. Get my f''ing truck. But, I didn't respond to him... it's funny, yes. But just ignore it. If you draw too much attention to it, he will continue to do it because he knows he can use it as a method of getting attention. I ingored my son's (I didn't say anything to him or punish him). I really made an effort not to say it around the house from there on... even on the phone or by accident. And ignored it. I also would not get his truck for him if he said get my f''in truck. I would simply wait until he said something else, then do it.

It might be harder for you at first because you already drew so much attention to it, but I would still ignore and give him lots of attention when he is not saying it... like wrestle around with him any other time or something. When you start ignoring it though, expect to see a brief increase or burst in the behavior, but stick to ignoring, and it will stop... Give it a good two weeks...

He will not understand that we consider it a bad word because of it's meaning. Don't give any undue attention to it. Think about who he has been spending time with and listening to because they copy a lot of what they hear at this age. All the best. Hope your cowboy is speaking more age appropriately soon.

I wouldn't make a huge deal out of it since he doesn't know really what he is saying. Each time he says it I would just say "Ew that is a very icky word that doesn't sound nice!" and Look disgusted and then walk away. Sometimes if you make to big of a deal they just become more fascinated with it at that age.

I would try to ignore the word as much as possible. Try saying a replacement (and energetic sounding) repetitive word for him to use instead...you'll have to say it often yourself for a short time. He'll soon move onto a new exciting word. Distraction and subtle redirction will be your best tools for these younger years.

Politely, say we don't say that. Then think of a way to discipline.Maybe have time out.It works for us.Just get a chair put it in the corner of the room, and supervise your child for 5 minutes.Eventually,he won't say it.Or then again he could, and eventually he'll grow out of it.You also, should ask who taught him that word.He must hear it alot from someone or somewhere.

A 2 year old doesn't know what a bad or good word is so whenever he says it just ignore it.

Sometimes the word truck is difficult to say for some children. He may be saying it with a fruck spelling. I broke my son from that by saying t-ruck for him to get the pronunciation correct.
