I eat fish from local waters that I know are safe. I live in the mountains of Virginia and have studied the environment so I know my home county has clean enough water to eat the fish. If I lived in New York City, or most urban areas, I wouldn't eat the fish and would try to avoid the polluted ditches that they call waterways.

It depends on your location and age and gender. Even in waht we think are pristine areas, the fish may have unhealthy levels of mercury caused by power generation and waste incinceration. This is particularly true in the eastern states caused by these activities in the midwest where the stack treament is inadequate.

The dose also depends upon your age, gender and weight. For an adult, the likelihood of developing a cancer within an average lifespan is less than a younger person. The risk increases at younger age. Similarly, women of child bearing age are recommended to avoid all forms of some fish.

Nutrient pollution from agricultural sources are not nearly as harmful for consumption as if the fish was present in waters with industrial wastes.

So many lakes and rivers; so little time. I live on the Great Lakes - renowned for factory runoff. I eat the fish with impunity. Bass, trout, salmon, walleye, pike. The vast majority of any toxins are collected in the liver and fat of the fish. I remove the guts, heads and skin. Voila! No toxins.
