There used to be a Persian cat who lived down the street from me.He has been missing for several months. I am almost certain I saw this cat today because he looked like the same cat in the face the only difference was that this cat had lost a lot of hair.He was a tomcat who used to get into a lot of fights. Can cats lose their hair this way?

Yes. When cats fight, they go all out scratching and biting. They will rip out each others fur, and most likely if the tom cat doesn't have his rabies shot and scratches the Persian, the Persian will end up with abscess'

Yes, fighting can cause this; also living outside in conditions they are not used to can make them sick, get fleas, mites, not the right nutrition, weather and other things which can cause hair loss.
