Yeah it can work out quite alright for you as friends.
Keep in some occasional contact, but time and distance between you is important/required for a few months at least.
Also don't let him see you with another guy for a while as most guys feel physically ill when that happens, but as long as you don't date an obvious moron even that situation is not so bad.
However if I don't like their new guy I'm quite ready to hate him.
