How can we know we are hearing the truth in September when the General supposedly reports to the President on the staus of our war in Iraq. If Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney decide not to accept anything but good news will the General be forced to lie in order to keep his job?

Oh, I'm pretty sure he'll tell the truth. The problem is that it is in the interest of the administration to put a good spin on the information, and it is in the interest of the Dems to put the worst spin.

Hell, I can tell you what it will say already. "The surge is working, but we need more time to consolidate gains. The Iraqi government is fighting hard beisde us. they have not made as much progress as we would like, but they are making progress. X is going great, Y is going not great, and so on and so on."

I seriously doubt there will be any real shockers in his testimony.

Quite honestly, Gen. Petraeus is bound by the confines and definition of his job duties to report to the Executive Branch of the government the exact status of things in Iraq.
Whether or not that branch deems certain aspects of that information worthy enough to disseminate to the general public, only time will tell.
I'm positive that there are reasons that the entire truth is not reported, whether good, bad or indifferent. I'm kind of an optimist, in that I'd like to believe that the people who occupy that big house on Pennsylvania Avenue have good reasons for not telling us certain things, but it doesn't look like my optimism has been winning out too well as of late.

It looks to me that the democratic congress has convinced you that all Republicans and Generals are evil liars. You are officially a lemming.

I believe General David Petraeus has a policy to "always tell the truth, in that way you don't have to remember what you said."

Generals aren't like law clerks, we don't replace them at the drop of a hat, especially good and effective Generals like Petraeus. He may be subject to having George Bush and Dick Cheney as his superiors, but he will not parrot what they tell him to say. He is his own man, and he will not hide the truth.

I would more readily believe anything Petraeus has to say, before I would believe either of the Clintons or the Congress.

I would estimate those chances at 99.9999999999%. To lie would put the General in contempt of Congress and he would lose his stars and his career.

What are the odds that the Democrats will accept the truth? I would place those odds at 10%. According to Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), if Petraeus reports success, it will be a problem within the Democrat Party on how to proceed further.

Thus far, the surge appears to be working. Violence is way down in the Anbar province.

His fealty to the President didn't impede his ability to give an unflattering progress report -- and doubtful forecast for the future -- back in June.

It's hard to believe you are an American spouting such diatribe, HOW DARE YOU insinuate that a General such as Patraeus would stoop as low as you obviously are, HOW DARE YOU, you are the real enemy within.

I don't think the American people really have a right to know this classified information.

Truth, what truth?

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

It's a war - there are li(n)es in war.

The only truth is what doesn't exist.

Reports will be filed and black lines will fill them appropriately.

(DID THEY TELL THE TRUTH DURING THE FIRST GULF WAR?)
