it doesn't seem possible to stop a nuclear missile it is traveling at such a high speed and if it were shot down it would kill everyone with in the area i can only see bomb shelters deep underground as a really good defense but other then that,,,, hehehe .........were pretty much screwed

They cannot shoot down any incoming missiles. The chance of hitting an incoming missile is the same as two people firing pistols at each other and both of their bullets striking each other in mid flight. The only possible approach is to hit their missiles while they are still in the launch sites where we know the precise location. George should be good at this battle plan since he likes to start wars for no reason. Once the opposition's missiles are released and coming over the North Pole you can find the deepest cave and hope for the best two weeks from that hour.

Honestly no, I'm in the army and I can tell u (cause I've asked in ASM meetings and I've been told truly there is no way to defend against a nuclear attack is one has already been engaged, with most missiles they have anti-strike missiles that can shoot them down, but with nuclear missiles shooting them in mid-flight is just as destructive as letting them hit the ground. either way the damage would be felt on a global scale. IE: weather changes climate changes, and even with bomb shelters, it would be a good 20-30 years before the land exposed to a nuclear bomb would be able to stablize life, not to meantion the air would be contaminated for as long or longer.

Depends on what you mean by defense. Is there a way to stop it... yeah there's lots of ideas about that, including diplomacy to prevent the attack in the first place, pre-emptive EMP strikes which disable weaponry and disintegrate nuclear material, laser beams, counter-missles, and so on. Those methods all focus on destroying a weapon that has been launched already, and they rely heavily on knowledge of the incoming weapon. Counter-intelligence, diplomacy, and pre-emptive attacks are the main ways of preventing launches.

Is there a way to survive a blast when you're sitting on top of the thing... maybe... it's classified.

Yes, shoot the ICBMs out of the air, we have a system to do such too!

Nuclear bomb shelter under the white house and saddam's old bomb shelter cell could take a direct hit from an atomic bomb and live for 1-2 months. :D!

theres are few types of defense such as s.t.a.r. w.a.r.s which is an airborne detection of incoming misslles. on land theres fall-out shelters with radiation seal along with lead coated suits. but the land defense such as those are no more than temporarily so radar detection is the way to go.

Not being there would be a good defense.

We do have some missile interceptors. Not as many as we'd have if there hadn't been such rabid opposition to "Star Wars", but some.

Are you addressing1. the initial blast, 2. the radiational effects,or 3. the aftermath when the millions of osterages( who have stuck their heads into the ground and denied this could happen to them), are going bersurk with pampaging, looting, pilfering, thieft, brawls, pillaging for food ( after 4 to 6 hours of the initial detination, there won't be any food left on the stores shelves to buy, AT ANY PRICE), no gasoline, AND GOD FORBID NO BOTTLER DRINKING WATER, ""OOOHHHHH GOD, I JUST CAN'T EXIST WITHOUT MY BOTTLED WATER"" !!!
Us older Americans can remember the early 1950's to mid 1960's and " THE BOMB SHELTERS" !!
UNDER GROUND, PREFERABLY DEEPER THAN 6 FEET, SOIL SURFACE TO OUTSIDE/ TOP OF CEILING OF THE SHELTER, AT LEAST 7 DAYS FOOD, WATER, MEDICINES, NECESSARY LIFE SUSTAINING ITEMS, etc.
THIS WILL START TO TAKE CARE OF #'S 1 & 2 . NUMBER THREE:: WHY DO YOU THINK THE GUN CONTROL ADVOCATES WANT TO TAKE AWAY YOUR GUNS????????
I have a home north of Houston, a small ranch in south west Texas, and a retirement home in the mountains of north central Mexico!!! IF I COULD GET THE HELL AWAY FROM HOUSTON, OR ANY CITY OVER 100,000 POPULATION, I WILL GO TO THE RANCH, AND THE MEXICO HOME, TO SURVIVE THE AFTER EFFECTS OF THE INITIAL BLAST !!! WHO IN THIS WORLD WANTS TO WASTE BOMBS ON WEST TEXAS AND / OR THE DESERT MOUNTAINS OF MEXICO???
I HOPE THAT I HAVE ASSISTED YOU, AT LEAST A LITTLE !!

The Patriot Missile.
It can intercept and destroy an incoming missile at a safe altitude 50% of the time.
I'd sleep safer if that number were 100%!

there are radar defense systems that are improving all the time but large scale attack would overwhelm them and we appear to be close to starwars type system but they will never tell you
unfortunately you will only know if it exist when it is used and only know if it works when you don't die
