His step father's name is on his birth certificate and he hasn't asked his mother his last name. It is kind of a sore subject.

doesn't he have the last name or did his mom remarry and change it? maybe she didn't change the birth certificate. check the hospital where he was born. if he gets a last name you could try zabbasearch.
EDIT- it may be a sore subgect with his mom but, if he approaches her about this with respect and explains things, hopefully she'll talk to him. surely, she'll understand his need for answers. i'm afraid that's his only shot. good luck.

Hmm - that's hard.

Has he gone to the courthouse where his birth certificate is filed to get the original? Then - it's a matter of asking people. Does his mother have any relatives that might give him a hint?

Even if it's a sore subject, this is this man's life! I understand it's awkward and may cause a rif, but think of how it can balance out! You may be one more step to finding him! ASK HER!!! It might be the door that needs to be opened. Hurry before it's too late.

Without even a last name to go by, it's real tough. If his mom is still alive she can be the only one to start him in the right direction otherwise he'd have to spend a fortune to find him, maybe.

Myfamily.com is a great resource for this type of search. I agree however, that with only a first name, not a last, it does increase the difficulty.
