God is a gentleman. He presents us with the truth and then gives us the option to believe it or not. So when you have a preacher, or any Christian for that matter, distorting or misinterpreting what God said, it's a result of their ignorance or ill-meaning as opposed to His.

There are roughly 472 offshoots of Christianity in the USA alone. maybe less worldwide. The Major ones being the Catholic, Protestant and its offshoots, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox.
Some self proclaim Christian groups start out with the answer first then build questions around that answer in order to create a group of followers. An idea or notion then pursue it with scripture to defend it. And because the majority of so called Christian's don't read the bible, they become easy prey for dubious minsters. Roughly 94% of all christians have never read the bible.
So where does God come into play here? God has nothing new to add to his written word. It all ended with Christ dying on the cross to redeem us from our sins. Its written down in the form of the bible. It is the duty of self proclaim christians to read it and to challenge their Pastors, Ministers or priest on it. God will not twist your arm to believe. The choice is up to the individual. You will find there are some who wrestle with God in insisting that he does not exist. That is rather foolish and a waste of time. All they have to say is that God is not for them and not try to muster up all sorts of excuses and reasons to justify their refusal. Ignoranantly they might point to christainities darkess history to justify their position of denial or refusal. It is not God's job to convert us. It is our job to believe. But we do have a choice. History is what it is. God's judgement will be fair. I will not distort history to support a position without first knowing ALL THE FACTS.
And indeed, God has over the centuries worked to recitify the evils of the past committed by the church of Rome. It gave way to the protestant movement, thanks to Martin Luther. But this movement was also meant to help the church of Rome.

I know what you mean. It's almost as if he isn't invested in making us decide what we believe about him. We can always learn more about him when we get to heavan and see him in person. It's like okay, how do we even know that the Bible is our direct line of communication with God when there are so many other books that claim the same thing?

Paul’s words make it clear that there are true “inspired expressions” and false ones. He refers to both kinds at 1Â Timothy 4:1 when saying that “the inspired utterance [from Jehovah’s holy spirit] says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons.” This identifies the source of the false “inspired utterances” as the demons.

Although we were made in the image of God, we are imperfect and always trying to interpret God thru our own image..... Everyone thinks that their way is the only way and that, again, God is of their making....
God is giving us the gift of free will,...including all the wrong aspects of it; to believe or not to believe,... to twist his words or to see the truth....etc.

So few people want anything but something from God.
and a sense of safety for eternity.
There is no day to day contact.

Define what you mean by God. You will find the answer right there. Nobody can define God and when they try their definition is shown to be impossible. So all the God believers make up their own stories and then fight each other to the death over them.

It may interest you to know that , DP,.....God is not taken by surprise when men misjudge Him....in fact, He predicted it long ago...in Scripture...
You see He knows the heart of man...how wicked and deceitful it can be.
"The heart is deceitful above all things, desperately wicked, who can know it".
