I have a really tiny balck spot on one of my molars. It is completely pain free and is not sensitive to anything. On the same tooth I also have a faint black streak which is also pain free. I think these are stains. If they are cavities could they be filled with only a numbing gel if they are so small? pleaze help!

when I say numbing gel I mean use that instead of a shot. I know I still have to get it drilled.

O.k here goes. Up till last December I hadn't seen a dentist for 4 years and eventually I went because my teeth started to ache. I am not scared of the dentist, I just don't like going. So I went and he said that I had 4 cavities. 2 of them where pretty shallow and the other 2 were abit deeper. He did the first 2 on seperate appoinments and he didn't give me the numbing injection. The first one was o.k. but on the second one I felt some huge twinges with the drilling, so when I went back for the last 2 I told the dentist that if he didn't give me an injection he my loose a finger.

Having cavities filled without anesthetic can be quiet painful no matter how shallow they are so I sugggest that if you need a filling go with the injection, I can guarantee to you that it doesn't hurt, if you lie still, close your eyes, and think happy thoughts it will be a faint sting that lasts about 10 seconds.

Good luck, there is no need to be a afraid.

They may just be stain- but you should have your dentist check them out soon. The smaller the cavity- the smaller the filling. If they are only removing a small area of decay it is possible to not have to be numbed with a shot. You can have nitrous to relax and see how it goes.

The numbing gel only affects the first couple of layers of tissue (to lessen the "poke" of the needle) it won't numb the nerve inside your tooth.

If you're too nervous- your dentist can prescribe Valium for you to take before your appointment.

Good luck and call your dentist ;)

No. At the dentist, the have to drill it to remove any of the rotten area. Those are for temporary cases to hold you over until you get to the dentist. If you use that and DON'T go, then the bacteria is still inside the tooth and will continue to eat away it until it's a huge hole and is extremely painful. Make an appointment to the dentist and ask them
