Since 1924 salt has been iodized in the United States to prevent goiter, a condition we don't see much anymore because iodine is now regularly added to table salt.

You can buy salt that hasn't been iodized such as natural sea salt but iodized table salt is among the very few sources of dietetic iodine and we need that for good health.

Iodine is an important component of our thyroid hormone. Putting it in our salt is an efficient way of making sure people get it in their diets. If you eat a lot of seafood, iodine is also plentiful there. If our bodies do not synthesize enough thyroid hormone due to iodine deficiency, we become hypothyroid and lethargic.

It was a progressive political decision from the time such things first became popular back in the 30's. Many, especially in the mid-west, had goiters due to dietary deficiencies. Seafood in those days might be hard to come by, but everybody used salt.
