Yes, they did---and until 2047, Hong Kong will retain some of its freedoms and autonomy by decree. Freedoms that mainland and other parts of China cannot lay claim to.

Its official languages are Chinese and English.

It has the highest index of economic freedom in the world, has the most beautiful and easy to navigate international airports, is rated #1 for its skyline, and is universally perceived to be a good city to live and work in---ONLY if you can afford what it costs to do so.

Unfortunately, it is also a huge destination for human trafficking/smuggling, corruption is rampant and the cost of living is so high, there are many people who live in poverty or servitude to survive.

Absolutely. Hong Kong was under British rule until 1997. That is why a great number of Chinese people in Hong Kong speak the Queen's English.

The asker made an assumption that there is no freedom in China including HK and Mainland, which is misleading. Chinese people in mainland enjoy less freedom than those living in HK, however, that doesn't mean there is no freedom in mainland provinces..

I believe that they do. They have access to press and internet that the people on the mainland are not allowed. Also, they have much more in terms of "economic" freedom - i.e. they have the money to do more.
