It is a misunderstood term that refers to an incorrect legal analysis of immigration laws.

Under the 14th Amendment, anyone born in the US (other than at an embassy) is automatically entitled to US citizenship. Some people illegally come into the US, and give birth, to allow their children to become US citizens.

Some people (incorrectly) assume that this changes the parent's immigration status. Under the urban myth, the idea is that having a child allows the parent to stay -- the child being a citizen "anchors" them to the US.

Under federal laws, this is NOT what happens. The parent can still be deported, and the child can either stay with legal resident relatives or leave.

An anchor baby is born to parents who are not American, basically some believe that this means the parents will then get the green card and the right to stay in the US.

This is NOT the case, the child would have to reach 18 before they could sponsor the parents to come and live in the US. If the parents leave the US or are deported then the US child, who is a citizen is required to leave with their parents. But they will be allowed to live and work in the US when older.

Anchor baby is the term used when an illegal immigrant has a child in another country and gets to stay in that country because the child is a citizen.

Anchor baby or jackpot baby are pejorative terms used to refer to a child born in the United States to illegal aliens or other non-citizens. Such a child is legally a citizen of the United States. The term refers to a resident alien's child's role in facilitating "chain migration" under the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965. Immigration reductionists claim that the baby would become the "anchor" of a chain by which its family may receive benefits from social programs, and by which the parents may themselves eventually become lawful permanent residents or citizens of the United States.

Anchor baby is a term use for some people as to a way to immigrate legally into the U.S. For example if a mother has a baby in the U.S. that baby is a U.S. Citizen and in the future can petition for her and her family. Then all the family can immigrate into the U.S. legally. Of course, this will take a long time, but it is meant to better the future of the next generation in the U.S.

No it is not a racial slur. An anchor baby is a baby born of foreigners who cross the border and have their baby in the US. While they are illegals, their child is now a US citizen and they can collect welfare for that child.
