Dewclaws tend to get hung on things and pulled off, so many vets will remove them if they have the dog already in the office for something else (such as spaying/neutering or docking tails).
Not all dogs are born with dewclaws.

Some dew claws do not form properly and dangle. Dew claws that hang like that often get pulled/damaged during play and is very painful for the dog. Normally formed dew claws can become torn or damaged during regular activities that dogs do like digging holes, etc. Also, you get scratched less with your dog has had it's dew claws removed! Removing dew claws soon after birth is like cutting fingernails. Any longer than a couple days after birth and dew claw removal is like amputating a finger. When the procedure is done quickly it is very easy and doesn't even require stitches.

Vets remove dewclaws, tails, and ears because thats what the breeder asks them to do.
Docking, dew claw removal, and ear cropping is tradition for many breeds (since mos breeds wore originally developed as working dogs).
Some people just prefer the look. Personally, I think its stupid to change a dogs appearance. If you don't like the way a dog looks au-natural, than select a different breed you do like the look of.

Most dogs that have tails done get the front dewclaws done at the same time, at about three to five days old.
In other breeds, they do not do them. Hence the reason they would be removed from a Boxer.
Dewclaws are NOT removed in most cases!!! Geez people, get a CLUE!!!! Most dogs have them!!! If they are not done at the three to five day timeframe, the bones harden as they do in the tails and it is painful and there is more bleeding. It is a surgical procedure requiring anesthesia when they are older!!! They are NOT removed for no reason. It is NOT true that they get pulled off!!!! If the claw is "articulated" meaning it is attached to the joint, they are very hard to "pull off"!!! If they are NON-articulated, meaning they are just flapping in the breeze, they SHOUD be removed because those wpuld get snagged on things.
Look at the breed standards for most breeds and dewclaws are NOT removed!!!!

Removing dew claws is more of a safety issue. It's easier to remove the dew claws as young puppies then to have to have them removed because they have gotten it caught on something and riped it.

A vet usually leaves it up to the owner or it could be the vet preference. It may also depend on if they will be showing the dog

It's cosmetic like cropping ears and bobbing a tail. It is cruel and inhumane.
