That is a great Question. I own a Grooming Salon In Tracy, Ca. Cat's do need bath! I grew up in Cat Shows My mom was a major part of the California Cat Fanciers Association. Cats should be bathed, when they are dirty or greasy feeling. They do clean themselves, however they cannot exfoliate their own skin, this is where a nice luke warm massage bath comes in. When bathing Kitty make sure to use Shampoo that is specifically made for cats as a lot of cats can have severe reactions from different ingredients,. Cats do need to be brushed daily, yes even the short haired ones, it will loosen the dead coat and keep them from knotting up. We groom several short haired cats a week ,That the owner Say' But I thought she would groom herself" now the kitty is all knotted and it takes hours to fix. Call your local Cat Fancier Association and they can refer you to a good breeder or groomer that can help you determine, which shampoo is safe and what kind of proper brush to use.

It is your choice whether you want to bath your cat. If you feel that he is dirty, and he isn't cleaning himself, then by all means give him a bath! All these people saying not to give your cats baths are kinda wrong. My grandparents have a 16 year old cat, and they bathe her about once a month, since sometimes cats get too old and they can't do the best job cleaning themselves. My dad has a very fat cat, and they bathe and brush her, as she can't reach around herself to clean herself, and even for a short haired cat she gets mattes on her lower back just above her tail. My cats are both persians, and I bathe both of them about once a week. Just because they really need it. They are long hair and sometimes have mishaps in the litter box! All in all, it really depends on your cats age, weight, coat length and breed. Young cats are readily available to clean themselves properly. Some cats are a little bit more 'needy', and require some human intervention. Do what you think is best for your cat, and trim his nails before you give him a bath. Sometimes first times can be a little stressful, because they are new. Good Luck!

I don't bathe my cats. But they do get into the bathtub with me on their own. All my cats love water. I don't know why. They like the shower stall too. I have to fight to keep the shower door closed when I take a shower or all 6 cats will be in there. They love it!!!! I do turn on the shower when it's really hot and the air conditioner can't keep up. But I never actually soap them up unless they get into something dirty or smelly. When I do soap them up, I still use kitten tearless shampoo even though they are all adults. It helps with my allergies too that they all like water. Their dander stays down that way =) My cats even have their own rubber ducky's for the tub =) the kind that flash different colors. It's fun to watch them play! Best wishes to you and your new kitty =)

We have 6 cats and i rarely ever bathe them. When I think about it...3 of them I have never bathed.

One of them has allergies and dry skin so we bathe her every so often. The one I bathe every week because she is so fat she cat clean herself.

Cats are "designed" to keep themselves clean so they will never need to be bathed unless they stink OR the vet says so.

Cats hate water, but it is possible to bathe them. I ust fill the tub up with a few inches of water and have a BIG cup and scrub them up and rinse them. They HATE it but they will survive!!

There is some debate on this subject, but generally I believe in bathing cats only when they get into something really dirty, oily or smelly or if they are sick or elderly and can't take care of themselves. They do a pretty good job on their own. But they should be brushed daily if possible to keep their coats unmatted, reduce shedding and prevent hairballs.

You aren't. You can, that is if you want a cat frozen stiff like a statue from pure shock of touching water. Cat's clean themselves and they don't need baths. But! If you feel that you should bathe your cat, you can buy wipes for cats(similar to baby wipes) and use those to rub your cat down. Its a win win situation. Your cat doesn't know it was bathed and you have peace of mind by having a squeaky clean cat!

For an indoor cat ,I would only give your cat a bath only when it needs it. When it's sick and has soiled itself.

Cat's bathe themselves, so there's really no need to give them baths

I really don't bath my cats. They hate water, and they bath themselves. But I do think it's important to brush them to keep from having to clean all that hair off of your furniture!
