If it depends on the unit is there any way to check before I buy or are the map updates free?

maps are strange beasts.
GPS vendors by maps from 2 places. Each one has a different update schedule, and different companies buy them on different schedules. Someone once figured this out, but I don't remember exactly what it is.
SOOOO, if u buy it just before the GPS mfg updates it will be out of date soon. If u buy just after they update it may still be out of date because that may be just before the mfg updated.
bottom line, unless u get a lot of inside information from 2 companies, u can't tell.
