I'm 17, and garduate school this year. As a gift, my "god parents" are going to pay for me to get a tattoo. Im not sure what to get, i want one really bad. I'm just having a dilemma on what i want. I want something to symbolize something, and i know this is usually something only I can come up with, but any ideas? How did you pick yours? Why? I know it's early to ask (considering I graduate in may 2008) but I want to have something well thought out since its going to be embedded on me forever. Thank you in advance.

I chose an American Bison to honor my Native American heritage. I don't know if that helps you at all.

I'd suggest just starting to look at designs online. If you Google 'tattoo designs' (or whatever you like that you'd possibly want) in the images category you'll come up with alot of great ideas.
My tattoo that I got recently is based off a temp. tat that I got out of a gumball machine when I was like 16. You never know where your insparation will come from. Just make sure it's YOUR inspiration, not a copy of something you see in a tattoo book somewhere. They're great for ideas, but the final product should be personalized to your style.
Hope this helped some.
Happy Inking!

Your tattoo expresses who you are.It takes alot of consideration when getting one.I love unicorns and wild life.I have a unicorn on my chest and am getting a wolf head on my shoulder.I also have a rose in bedded in a spider web that symbolizes beauty trapped by fear.Think carefully because you will live with it all your life and removal is expensive and scarring.Tattoo's are safe and clean-unless you get it from someone on the street.Go to pro and enjoy your body art.

Get something that has meaning for you, not something that is trendy. I love cats, so I got a tattoo of a black cat. I thought about it for years before I finally got that first tat. My second tat is a dreamcatcher. I decided on that when I was going through some hard times & felt all my dreams in life were slipping out of reach. I love both my tats.

I have a treble clef on the back or my neck, it simple and elegant just how id like to think i will be remembered.
i dont think everyone that gets a tattoo puts heaps of thought into it, alot of the time its on a whim that they decide to get one, and then regret it later.
Its good that you are thinking about it now, because when you are ready to get it done, you will have exactly what you want.
whats something that you have likes for most your life, and dont feel like your feelings will change about it, maybe use that, a hobby or faveorite animal.

good luck. dont be worried about the pain, its not half as bad as i thought it would be.

Wait until you KNOW what you want and where you want to get it placed on your bod. Don't get one just because you can, that's pretty lame. I always suggest picking something out and figuring out where you want it, and if you still want the same tattoo in the same place six months from that time, then do it.

Look back into your heritage and get some kind of symbol from that. For example, my grandmother was from Ireland so I got some Celtic art on my back. Plus, I love the way Celtic art looks it's awesome! But, it was a good way to remember her by.

I really like the rose idea, a friend of mine who is male had a similar tattoo on his back in remembrance of his nan and its beautiful! I definitely think that idea but with the writing idea of the dove one as I think banners are very typical and it would be nice to just simply have her name and maybe her date of birth etc? Sorry for your loss

are you really religious ? if so get a symbol of that religion. i know a lot of people with memorial tattoos for dearly loved ones who have already moved on. i plan on getting one soon(still saving money) of the triple goddess spiral. some people get their initials, or i no a few people with their c/o 08( in your case) is there any phrase or saying or word(s) of wisdom that really mean something to you ?

For me it wasn't hard to decide. I grew up surfing, so I have a sea theme going, and I love it. Your right, it's something you need to decide on, so think about the things you enjoy doing or the loved ones around you. Don't worry, you'll get it...
