There have always been 73 since the Bible was first complied about 1600 years ago.
protestants only have 66, because Luther took out 7 books from the Old Testament during the reformation 500 years ago.

Depends on the version. If I recall correctly, the Protestant versions have 66, and the Catholic ones 74.
