one clarification on the "hunting" dog - hounds are bred to hunt FURRED game - dogs bred to hunt birds are sporting breeds. The rest is correct sighthounds are a subgroup of hound bred to hunt game by sight. They are the speedsters of the dog world since they are expected to catch the game. senthounds hunt by smell and need less speed since the sent trail sticks around long after the quary is outta sight. The two may be used in series the senthound to locate quary the sighthound to catch it (the cry Tally-Ho was originally a signal to release the sighthounds)

A hound has to do with its kind of blood, if you know what I mean. A sighthound was born for a seeing job to do, much the way a Bloodhound 'scents.'

There are 2 kinds of hounds, sighthounds and scenthounds. Sighthounds are greyhounds, Salukis, wolfhound etc and hunt by seeing their prey, they chase by sight. Scenthounds are Beagles, Basset Hounds, Bloodhounds, etc and hunt by smell, they find their preys scent and chase the odor.
