My dog is the same way, I suggest you contact your dogs vet and get tranquilizer pills. If you give him one an hour before a thunder storm, it won't even phase him. Other than that, I suggest you just try to comfort him as much as you can, stay near him, pet/scratch him and he will feel much safer. They are scared simply because they don't know what these sounds/lights are and whether or not it is going to hurt them. I hope i helped!

I had a Yorkie that was not afraid of anything, he was a nasty little dog, so fear is not an inherited thing. I have a pound dog, half great Dane and half GSD that is so afraid of thunder that he will go through a window if he thinks he can get away from the noise. I just was reading the other day that if you have to leave the dog and there is going to be noise (thunder, Fourth of July,) then put the dog in a dark or dim place such as your bathroom, turn on rap or noisy music, give him a nice blanket, then act secure (no, poor baby or anything like that) and close the door. I was told that once they are frightened, they will pretty much always be frightened of loud noise.

Dogs do not like the low booming sound. It shakes them through and through. One thing you do not want to do is to try and calm the dog. Do not tell it everything is OK as this is telling the dog that being afraid is OK. You might get a sound recording of a thunderstorm and play that. First at low volume and keep increasing the volume in stages once the dog begins to remain calm. You have to remain calm, keep acting normal, ignore the dog. If you have established alpha with the dog this will help immensely. As the dog will look to you as to be afraid or not.

I've heard that if you play a CD of thunderstorms at a low volume until the dog gets used to it and gradually turn it up, the dog will eventually get used to them.
If a dog is afraid of them the one thing I've been told is, not to comfort the dog. You can either totally ignore him while the thunderstorms are happening, or you can take his mind off of them. Make him do tricks or teach him some. Work on obedience (inside) with him play his favorite game anything to take his mind off the thunderstorms.

good luck

Just try to keep him calm. Don't let him go out of the room where you are, but don't pet on him a lot when he acts like that... it makes him think that this behavior is ok.

And then again, he may just be scared of thunderstorms forever. I mean, I know some people that are.
My mom used to ahve a dog that would try to dig out of te bathtub everytime there was a storm.

Some dogs are just "fradycats"!!
Good luck

Well the noise for one might scare him. He is just scared! Some dogs are afraid or thunderstorms while others are scared of vaccum cleaners. It's probably the noise. Just try to hold him close to you. If he trys to get away just let him. There's nothing you can do.

Dogs hearing, like their smell, is much sharper than ours. They won't eat during this time, any more than we actually should when we're not feeling up. Its got to be herbal or something alkaline that you feed it. Go to http://www.drsfostersmith.com and see what they have.
