First of all i have a pitbull puppy and no im not using him for fighting. Ive done some research on the spring poles and i have received mixed reviews. I live in the desert and we dont have any trees in our back yard and i am looking for things for him to play with. Trust me he has plenty of toys hes pretty much spoiled lol. I really want to know if it safe for him when he gets older. Once again i do not believe in dog fighting. Please be considerate i am a first time dog owner.

One of the best toys I ever bought was a tether ball. My dogs played with it a whole lot more than my kids ever did.

Please be VERY careful leaving your dog outside for ANY length of time unattended in the desert. Even when its cool, the sun can be a real hazard for a dog.. especially if it is black.

Congrats on the new addition to your family! I am not sure what a spring pole is, so can't really give advice there, but keep the little bugger entertained. Kong toys are pretty indestructible. Good luck!

spring poles? I'm not sure what you mean. The only reference to spring poles I've heard is with agility weave poles. However, a fun outdoor toy for a bigger dog like this might be setting up a well installed tetherball. I wouldn't leave him in the yard, as your temperatures get awfully high for a dog with no shade. He could be targeted by people who do fight, and be stolen out of your yard and thrown in for fighting Pits to "spar" with. Also, depending on your location, there could also be snakes or scorpions in your yard that could endanger him. Indoors, Buster Cubes and Kong toys are great for keeping a dog entertained while you are busy (check out the Kong website for lots of info).

Your puppy is going to need lots of human interaction and socialization. Top trainers reccommend meeting 100 different people in the first 100 days you have your dog. This is especially important with a guard breed, so that they are comfortable and friendly with people. They can become aggressive or fear biters if they are not well socialized.

EDIT: AAHhh, I see (I looked it up!). Interesting... looks like something my goofy Border Collies would get a kick out of. I actually put something like this in, in my basement, much simpler. I had hung a rope with a tennis ball at the end from the ceiling for my cats to play with, but noticed the only one excited about it was my dog. She enjoyed playing with it (with me around) and tugged so hard the beam it was tied to creaked! I stopped her finally, fearing for her teeth! I also play tug with my dogs, to relieve pent up energy. Playing tug, handled correctly, reinforces your position as "alpha dog". Great explaination I read recently is in Tamar Gellar's new book The Loved Dog. Good book on positive training, with a whole chapter on tugging with your dog. I've found with my dogs that usually, they don't play with much but bones and stuffed Kongs (they consider these food more than toys) unless I play with them. They are social creatures, and it's no fun by yourself! It will be a challenge tugging with a pit, though, especially if you're a small woman! They are a very strong breed! You might tie the tug to something stationary, so that you can "win" regardless of strength issues. My Border Collies are only 45 lb dogs, and they can pull me (and my really large hubby!) across the floor on carpet or grass (I do better on hardwood!) You'll also want to research strong toys- a Pit will probably be able to destroy standard toys pretty quickly!
