It only has 74000 miles and I had the transmission serviced three months ago, but when I put it in park it continues to rev until I press down on the gas which seems to release it and it quiets down. There is also a slight high pitched sound while idling which is new. I will of course bring it to a shop but would appreciate any insight, cheers.

I had something similar happening with my Rubicon. Start with a simple solution: check your air filter. Mine was very dusty, choking the engine, and the computer responded by revving the engine at idle. I changed the filter and the idle returned to normal. $20 and five minutes.

If you ever found oil on your air filter, that oil got through and is teasing you intake air sensors. Some times a lil WD40 or a liquid lube down the throtel cabels will loosen up the muck that can be holding it back.

It's either a bad idle air control valve or throttle positioning sensor.

Look at the linkage, could be the throttle return spring has broken or just come off.

Your gas pedal or other movable part may be sticking. If it were to do this when in gear ........ that's dangerous.
Head for the mechanic sooner rather than later.
