Wise Sage,

Wonderful question and I had fun researching this and learning new knowledge;0)

A Sakabato sword-is unique type of Japanese sword. While normal Japanaese swords (Katanas) have the shorter side of the blade sharpened, the sakabato is sharpened on the opposite side. This is why it is known as a reverse-bladed sword. It is non-lethal until turned over.

This is the main weapon of the character Himura Kenshin, from the popular manga series Rurouni Kenshin. It was created by Nobuhiro Watsuki as an original weapon that represents Kenshin's lack of willingness to kill.

Watsuki has stated in an interview that the sakabatō was his creation. There is no record of reverse-bladed katana ever having been used historically in Japan and there is no existing school of swordsmanship that employs them. However, since the manga was published, non-functional sakabatō have been produced for purchase by collectors and fans..."

Take care and I love to learn and share what I have found,

Devin Willis

Sakabuto is a Japanese style sword (katana) with the sharp edge (ha) and the back edge (mune) reversed. If one were to use the sword to strike in the normal fashion you'd hit the target with the blunt edge. To the best of my knowledge this sword only appears in the anime series Rurouni Kenshin. In the series Kenshin is adverse to killing and uses the blunt edge to stun his enemies only using the sharpened edge as a last resort. Swords sharpened in this fashion were never made or used historically although some modern wall-hanger sword companies make them. If you really want one try E-Bay, but please don't try to actually use it or any other sword without training.

It's was created for fiction by the creator of the Rourouni Kenshin manga and anime series. It's a fictional sword pretty much like the Jedi Lightsaber.

Yes in Rurouni Kenshin (anime) the main character uses one to prevent from killing anyone. (its a long story.) Go to anime sword shops online or w/e and search Rurouni Kenshin reverse blade sword.
