Does anyone know of a good instructional dvd on learning to tattoo? Or can anyone help me with instructions on how to tattoo myself? I am a professional artist and I have all the equipment I need. I've been working on my tattoo for 3 years now. So I've been watching very carefully. Before I begin I want to make certain I'm doing it correctly. I've honestly had it with tattoo artists' and their attitudes and meanness and quite frankly, their "god complexes'. They've messed up my design by being so possessive and unyeilding; and the egotistic negativity regarding others' art forms. The days of the biker & prison tattoos is over. It is a mainstream "process" now. I believe anyone can learn to do it. If you can draw or trace, with a little instruction on how to use the gun, I think it can be done. So I've just decided to finish my tattoo on my own. So I'm just looking for a dvd on the use and maintenance of the gun and technique. Thank you!

it's not so much the "art" end of it that I'd worry about. It's how to do the actual work. Too much pressure and you ruin the tat, to little pressure and you ruin the tat. wrong needle size and again you ruin the tat. If you needed surgery, and the doc had an attitude, would you want to do the surgery yourself? If you have a problem with a tattooist, get another one. If several tell you your design won't work as is, maybe you should listen. They are the experts. Just because something looks good on canvass or paper doesn't mean it will work on skin. Skin is alive, it changes with age and other factors. Too much detail will tend to "blot' with age and become a dark mess with no detail. It takes a trained eye to know that. Tatoo artists must serve an apprenticeship and learn step by step. Doing it yourself, is a mistake. And, it's permanent mistake unless you want to spend thousands getting laser treatments that hurt far worse that the tattoo did.

You're an artist, and I'm sure you get annoyed at people who have no talent who refer to themselves as an "artist"

It's sort of a pride thing that comes along with being a tattoo artist...it takes a lot of skill and training to become one. You can't just watch a DVD and be a pro.

Artists like that suck. And I have a how to DVD, a few of them from when I first started and was doing my legs.
